I heard from a mechanic that unless you thrash your brakes, Humbrol Model Enamel is sufficient to paint your brakes with. Anyone know if this is definetly true?

I've used engine paint in the past and it has held up. If I were to do another set of calipers then I think I would just spend the extra to have them powder coated. It's not alot more ($50 tops for all 4) and brake fluid won't do anything to it.

powdercoating in texas must be a lot cheaper than here. $200+ for a full set of 4 calipers and brake carriers.

never heard of anyone using model paint so i can't comment on that. is it high temp?

Hey guys,
I've had great results with Foliatec products. Their caliper paint is probably the best on the market. You can hit the caliper with a mallet after it's fully dried and nothing will happen to it. It's a heat and chemical resistant epoxy.

I used duplicolor 500 degree engine enamal, it worked awesome looks great, but I would recommend the 1200 degree stuff for people who abuse your brakes.

H3 and M44ic- you are both northern snow belt drivers- has this stuff help up in snow and salt?

What does it do? Saves the brake pads, (sorry) I am new at cars, only thing I have ever done was changed the air filters and replace fulids, but I want to keep my 318ti.
Thanks!

It's just for the appearance,it doesn't add or subtract anything from your car. I bought a red kit so it's gonna stick out, exspecially when i get new rims.

the humbrol stuff says it is 266F (130C) depends if you thrash your brakes i suppose? only thing is it only comes in 15ml pots n you need bout 250ml or more!

i think i would go with the product the others recommended (foliatec) before i'd use model paint. just my humble opinion. you really don't want to be doing it again and if you have a binding/seizing problem, your caliper will get way hotter than 266F (forget what my shop found mine to get up to ... 400-500F i think).

Fair enough. i think i will just spend the extra few coins and get the proper stuff, in red, against a british racing green Ti. Should look loads better! How long does it take after painting before you can drive?

Give it a good 24 hours to dry.

Mines good up to 975f bought from tirerack.com. It says will dry in 2-4 hrs and shouldn't drive car for 24hrs and if you completly take your calipers off to paint them it says not to put them back on the car for 24hrs. My buddy got red ones for his mustang and another buddy got some for his gti.

POR sells colored paint now. Great colors and its impervious to most stuff.

Its takes a grinder to get it off. They have some you can coat exhaust manifolds with..

isn't EVERYTHING expensive in new york? costs like $5 to cross the street there, doesn't it? ;)

be interesting to see how the powdercoating lasts (compared with say the POR15 i used on my diff). sure looks nice now
