If I have a 318ti that rolled out the factory in Jan 1997. What M class is it?

An "M44" is the designation for your motor.

M44 is the motor used in the 318's from '96 on. Before '96, it was the M42 motor. The biggest difference is that the pre-96 motor is OBD-I, while the M44 motor is OBD-II.
On this question, was there an S42 or S44 motor?

OBD I = On Board Diagnostics 1
OBD II = On Board Diagnostics 2
It has to do mainly with emissions, but to some it up it is the level at which the ECU is able to monitor the car.

Not that I've ever seen. There is the s14 engine for the E30 M3.

What was so great about the S14? What made it such a great motor? Basically, what changed it from a M14 to an S14?

That would be the first M3 motor, I believe. Someone correct if I'm wrong and I'm not trying to sound like I know a lot, but I think the s14 produced around 196 hp??? not bad for the weight of the car it sat in. All the M car motors engine codes begin with S rather than M. Does that seem odd to anyone else? Shouldn't it be switched around.
There was an S42. Not a whole lot of info on it since it was a racecar only motor and never made it into any production vehicles. They are also VERY rare, would be a really cool swap if you could afford it.
here's some info

Sexy. It would only change displacement by about .2L, and doesn't really change the torque numbers. Oh but HP? TWICE stock M42 hp? Stock is a bit below 140, while that motor was turning 280? Anyone with the OBD-I M42 motor want to be a guinea pig?
