Found an m3 engine for my 318ti, good idea or no?

The engine i found is a 2002 S54 B32 Engine from an m3 rated around 333HP i was wanting to do the engine swap for my 318ti will this newer engine complicate things instead of going with the older m3 engine?

can't follow the link so maybe you don't have to worry about it :p you'd certainly have more work to do to get that into the car than the engine/trans from the e36 m3. doesn't mean it couldn't be done, but it would mean you'd have a lot more work and most likely expense. i don't know if anyone on here has even done it so you might get to guineau pig the whole thing.

it can be done... but boy it is expensive. You Also have t Re wire the dash harness and add a bunch of modules. REMEMBER! this is a double vanos engine.... you need to make sure it is pretty much a front clip, as you are going to be mising a lot of modules and harnesses. engine fits, you need to change the tranny etc. read about the TEC3 engine managment, I belive they make one for an S54 you can use to bypass a lot of the obd2 components.

vwt3, that's a 3.0l S50 into a Ti.. awesome swap... but the S54 swap (new M3 engines) is what he wants to do.
I want to see one of those!. !

see the problem is, I'm only going to have about 7g's for the whole project, that's parts and everything, I'd really like to have it done professionally, reason being, I have the tools and the knowhow/resources to do it myself, but I'd like to have the work done so i can have some sort of gaurantee on the parts and labor... anyone have any suggestions? really my biggest want right now is to get a good engine at a low cost, preferably a 1996-1998 m3 OBD-II engine.

if you are capable to do it yourself I would go for it, you learn alot from projects like these and there is no better feeling you get with the pride of telling people you did it and its awesome. anyone can pay someone to work on their car. its not as difficult as you think, plus we are all here to help with any Q's or problems you come across during the swap.

You are right, that's the only thing that's holding me back from getting it done professionally, that and the fact that I need to get the project underway and done by the end of the summer because I have to use this car to communte to college, lol so you see the risk. But I completly agree, there's nothing like building something on your own, even with helpful information from others. Any suggestions on where to get an engine, Im in southern california if that helps (LA) but I'm definately willing to buy online, thank you.

A body of mine just sold his 98 complete m3 engine for $3k around 100k miles. He got another one with about 74k on it. Im wainting for his call right now. Ill ask him how much he wants for it.

My current situation:

I have the 1996 318ti, perfectly working 4cyl engine with 124k miles on it, automatic transmission. The woman, and I'll say the only previous drive was an older woman, took the bmw to all the schedualed tune ups and oil changes, She gave me the book with the stickers to prove it. What im getting at is, what kinda price do you think your mechanic could do putting in a 3.2L m3 engine and manual transmission. While keeping my 4cyl engine and tranny to do whatever he wants to do with it. I just want it to be done and ready to drive for college in the fall.

I think for a good price I might be willing to come on up there to Portland, to have him do it, maybe take a week off work or something. Let me know what you think the price would look like for the engine/transmission swap.

It should be at the ballpark of around $7k complete, since you dont have a manual transmission arlready.

is the transmission for the m3 obd-II a 5-speed or 6-speed?

I dont think there's a us spec 6 speed that came out of the factory. 99 - down came with 5 speed tranny.
Hey tonymasone, if you are really serious about this swap why not buy J!M's swap manual. It's well worth it.

no problem just curious, so you think around 7k, that sounds pretty resonable, now what are they going to change? driveshaft/rearend? will the suspension need immediately changed?
