What might be wrong with the brakes?

Ok, I am new here and I don't know much of the 318 ti's, but
i just bought a 95 318 ti last week and I have questions. I love the car, and the brakes feel very nice, the thing is everytime I use them, I hear this screeching noise. What could that be???????

Worn pads?
A pebble stuck between the rotor and inside shield?
Disc brakes do make noise. Might need a shim?

from where (front/back/left/right)? does it vary with pressure? the more specific info you provide the more it would help.
