nice dude, i know a good shop down in san diego that you can get whatever you need from. I'm working on some credit issues right now (got my anual credit report, seems that someone has had a credit card in my name for about a year now, luckly they haven't bought anything illegal/always paid their bill) so i have to iron that out, but this week i was going to get a 1997 3.2L engine/5spd tranny/ecu/harnes/instrument cluster/shift assembly/clutch assembly/and maybe m3 calipers and rotors, but this thing came up with the credit, so i'm trying to get it all figured out b4 i leap into this build. if you don't mind me asking where'd you get the engine/what price/how many miles??

socal318ti
07-13-2005, 09:50 PM
http://www.bmrparts.com/ <-- for the engine.

I had it pulled with just under 50K miles. Its from a 97' so it should mate right up. What shop in San Diego are you talking about? Most place that I've looked into to doing the swap are in LA area. Thanks.

07-13-2005, 10:57 PM
the dude that's doign the swapp is at a place called "The M Shop" it's up in northern LA, he's done 2 other 318ti swaps and his car is actually the 318TI-M3 OBD-II conversion. He's doing the labor for 2G's wich i thought was great, + that includes warranty. (and he's got to deal with converting mine to the 5 speed.

Steve: I wanted to ask you if some of these other related posts should maybe be 'distilled' and added to the Compact6 area... As you thought, it does get a bit redundant at times, but the thread on the Z3 exhaust fitting the ti for example is excellent info that should possibly be moved.

I'm sure there are other things which have been posted, which contain information that only applies to swapped tis (but is certainly interesting information for other ti owners). This is the sort of thing that I believe the Compact6 section is 'designed' for.

How does this sound?

PS I obviously cannot move things around the forum here, but could weed through the relevant posts and PM links to you for things I think that should be moved in. Is this something you might want me to do?

Just to let you all know: I will be moving the majority of this 'roll call' into the Compact6 section soon. I'm not sure what to do with the chit-chat posts within the thread yet... Probably just leave them, then you can delete your posts if you want, or we will re-name the thread so those with few posts don't loose the count. This is not a punishment, just trying to organize and neaten things up.

If you have a swapped ti and do not have the ability to post (please note stricter rules for posting) in Compact6 please let Steve know so you can post as well as view. (all members can view) Naughty posters will have irrevelant posts removed. I think the threads should perhaps be started outside of Compact6, and moved in later. I've noticed the threads tend to 'drift' off topic as they grow longer...

For anyone else wanting to post: don't worry! We all see the new posts so we will hear you!

Anyone can PM me as well...

About a month ago, after owning my Ti for about 6 months, I blew my M44. So last weekend after scraping up $3200 for a totalled '98 M3, I began my swap. Worked from noon till 5 on saturday, 11 till 4 on sunday, and 2 till 5 on tuesday. After such a small amount of work, my swap is almost completed. Tomorrow is saturday, and I have the whole weekend off work, so I'm hoping I can get all of the mechanical work finished, and just have wiring and the EWS alignment left by sunday night. So far the swap has been fairly easy, only problems I've run into so far is the exhaust not bolting up, which will be a fairly easy fix. I can't wait for the newly found horse power :)

And on that note, how do I get priveleges to post in the Compact 6 section?

cali-ti

Just joined and thought I would add my ti to the list.

97 Cali roof with 3.2 swap, M3 brakes, wheels, trans and vaders as well as the bumper and mirrors. UUC shift kit and Bilstein shocks with H&R springs. Chip and under drive pulleys with M coupe exhaust and X brace. Cold air intake, camber plates and Euro lights. (Other stuff too, but hard to remember it all these days)

Still looking for a LS diff to add to the swap.

These conversions are a blast to drive!

I must have missed this thread everytime I've been on for the last year or so.........

Better late than never.

I totalled my "330ti" last summer, but its still parked in my driveway awaiting the right 318ti for the conversion, version 2.0.....

I have a stock 98' 318ti right now, but it's not the "right one".

My 1997 330ti was built with the following parts:

- 95' S50, ported & polished, with BEE Cams
- custom built 3.23 LSD from Mcoupe by Diffsonline of Stoneham, Ma
- E30 6cyl half shafts
- complete M3 front suspension from my 95' M3 donor car
- M3 steering rack
- M3 front brakes
- M3 ZF 5 speed transmission
- M3 6-bolt drive shaft
- custom modified Trifo Exhaust for E36 M3
- custom built 4" intake system w/ cold air box
- M3 Vaders
- M3 cluster
- M3 console

My car did manage a dyno run before I spun it in the rain.
239 rwhp & 228 wrtorque

Enough to beat an E46 M3 (from a dead stop to 115mph, then he started to pull on me), a Boxter S, several STI's and Evo's (both on the highway, not from a standing start.)

This is my first post, so hello.
It took two years or so to get it right, but I am finally done. I have a 97 318ti with a 98 M3 3.2 motor swap. Complete M3 suspension up front and M coupe trailing arms in the rear with an Mcoupe LSD. In addition, this took forever to get right, I installed a supercharger with an aftercooler and heat exchanger. I am runnig 8.3lbs of boost. We did the dyno runs last week and got 336 to the rear wheels. We figured we are close to 400 hp at the crank. Been driving the car hard like this for two weeks, still runs great, no overheating, minimum blow by, no pinging.

Sounds great, nicely done... I opted for a glass-pac turbo muffler and had the exhaust re-done from the headers back, 3.45 rear end, ltw flywheel and m3 clutch, kept the ti's slave cylinder... I also added a M coupe shifter which is very short throw and a bit notchy.

Yea, it's a secret (). Check out the thread titled vented rear brakes on e36 compact? by e36 323ti (http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12852) Post #146 on page 10 of that thread shows the actual e30 M3 rear calipers and explains how they fit on the ti carriers.

The exhaust is having some finishing touches done to it and it will be done and ready for me on Monday to install. I'm having a buddy TIG weld all of the joints together and the hangers too.

Did you find the e36 shifter to be angled back towards the rear of the car when it is in 2nd and 4th gears somewhat excessively? On my car I used the shifter, selector rod and the shifting arm from an e36 but it seemed like the selector rod was about a 1/2"-3/4" too short. I'm just curious since mine is just angled back too far for me. When I row the shifter from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th the shift knob slides off the end of the shifter because of the way it's angled. That's no good. I ordered an e36 short shifter and I've straightened it out on a press. I haven't installed it yet, but I think that this should take care of the problem.

I had the opposite problem... I only used the shifter from an M coupe, and the stock ti parts for the rod and arm... At first, the shifter was too far forward (and the selector rod too long), so we bent the selector rod into a slight V to get the desired results... Some people have bent the shifter itself to get it where they want it... I may still do that, but I need to get the replacement plastic bushing if I pull the shifter out again...

There is a small switch on the clutch pedal that will prevent it from working. I had to take mine apart to replace the clutch master cylinder. I didn't get it back together just right and I didn't realize it until later.

CT- Been a lurker on here a while, posted a couple times but now I finally have a good reason to. Finally got my s50 swap finished :-D 95s50 w/71kmiles into black 95ti w/156kmiles on body. 3.25(I think)LSD, Cf hood, Battery relocate... more to come been really busy with work, so I can have the money to buy the things I want. I will eventually swap over the m3 brakes, suspension upgrades, etc. I will post pics after I wash my car again. still needs alot of work, but I am happy to be a member here, and thank you for the support that got me through to this point.

Thanks for the welcome, I will start posting pics when I get a free minute I can post some before pics maybe tho, must wash it again before I take new pics, it got rained on, mowed on, pollened on, and dirted on the other day like 2 days after a wash, so it needs it again. then I will upload. I have a small vid of it though on youtube that I am uploading now. I'll post link as edit later.
p.s. That's me getting in the car

Checking in. Bought a '95 with '95 M3 engine. PO also swapped in M3 front struts with brakes, and 17" wheels all around. It also came with cold air intake, header, and sweet sounding dual exhaust. It will be fun to learn how to drive it.

Man, that engine bay is SO much cleaner than mine :frown:

So that's what roadstars look like on a TI. Wonder how bad they'd rub on my suspension. That guy selling a set in AZ was tempting me, I just couldn't justify spending the money on a second set of rims that probably would take a lot of work to make fit on my car

Those wheels just came on the car. Rear fender lips had been rolled to fit, but the rear wheels still stick out a little. A little too boy racer for my taste, but I'll roll with it till I don't have better things to spend money on. Even with the offset tire sizes, the rear still wants to step out so I'll be hanging out in the suspension forum for a while.

dear 1996 328ti
i saw u have a 96 ti with a 96 motor in it
i have a 97 ti and want to put a 96 328is motor in it
i was wondering what you had to do to the electrics, i am under the impression that the only options to get around the ews2 system are
1-to do the swap using the dme and wiring harness of the 6cyl and have the dealer sync the system(keeping ews functioning)
2-swap using the 6cyl dme/harness but splice the ews wires to bypass it and use a pre95 6cyl dme(not sure but i think it will have to be a maroon one)
3-use the obd2 dme that came with the 96 2.8 motor along with that harness and get an ews delete/motor remap chip(ebay)
is this correct please correct me if im wrong or there are any other ways
i am not messaging this because i want input from all
thanks

Hi, welcome
You don't have any of that (1-3). Just use the EWS module, DME, and key chips from the donor car and swap those into the 318ti chassis/parts. I would advise to keep the 2.8l harness intact and just plug it into the 318ti chassis harness. If you do this right (essentially plug and play) everything should fire up just fine. Check the swap section for several walk throughs and DIYs

also anyone who has seen J!M's guide, is it worth the money, and would it be helpful to me with my above question(does it include info about electrics to be used with an obd2 97ti with an obd2 96 328is motor)-particularly ews2 solutions

I've never had the manual, but a lot of my fellow swap peers speak highly of the book in it's helpfulness. There is plenty information here on the site to get by, but I would not be against anyone purchasing the book to simply educate themselves to get all the answers in one book. I'm not bias because I've never had the book

wow thats awesome to hear because it will make the swap soo much easier
so i can just plug the 2.8l motor harness into the ti's chassis harness and replace the ti dme(behind battery), ews box(under glovebox-usa car) with the 2.8 ones and im not sure what the key chip is(is it the chip in the actual key or is it the ignition piece inside the steering column

and this will work even though both cars are obd2 and (i believe) have ews2

I have also herd that the header and mid pipe(2.8) can be used from any 328(sedan or coupe) in the Ti swaps but the cat back section(including muffler) must be from a 2.8l z3
Or just make a custom exhaust

I have a '96 sunroof-less Calypsorot chassis from Italy that came with an M44 & Getrag 5-speed. Had 200k on the chassis when I completed the swap in August 2013. Swapped in a '97 328i M52 engine (with 114k), ECU, dash cluster & front suspension. Used a ZF trans, shifter and driveshaft out of a '96 328ic (direct bolt-in). Diff (3.25 w/LSD) out of an E28, and axles from an E30. Lightweight flywheel/clutch. Complete suspension & brake rebuild, including Koni single-adjustables all 'round, H&R Sport springs (318ti set; front sits too low!), Polyflex purple bushings throughout, and factory x-brace. Engine mount reinforcements welded-in. Racing Dynamics 28mm & 19mm sways for a Z3 ready to go in. Glass-matt Miata battery moved to trunk. Magnaflow two-into-one muffler completes the sleeper look but sounds roarty.

About three weeks ago, I picked up a sunroofless, '96 with ratty Boston green paint, a full TC Design roll cage, Moton Clubsport double adjustable shocks, a DTM style trailing arm rear suspension, and a complete 2002 M-roadster drivetrain (minus the transmission that's E36 M3). Includes a partially stripped 2002 M-roadster wiring harness (engine and body), and, yes that means its running an S54 engine with stock computer.

Its a beast, but needs a lot of development. Once the fuel starvation is fixed (thanks Dan I) I have a 3.73 differential to install, need to find a E46 M3 airbox/intake muffler, need to reflash the computer from M-roadster to M3 tune, then I need aero, suspension setup training and more rubber...

Add me to the list, I finally finished my swap, 95Ti now with a 92 M50 non-vanos engine/tranny from a 325i. I used a z3 exhaust and a set of ebay headers. Already had a E30 diff in the car and 328 front brakes.
