Why do I smell exhaust fumes on recirc???

I bought a 1996 ti with 48K miles about 8 months ago. Runs well, with no particular problems. However, I get smell of exhaust fumes sometimes even when the a/c is running on recirc. It's not all the time, and my exhaust system looks solid underneath, so I don't think I have an exhaust leak. But it's kind of annoying -- here in Arkansas it's too @#$%&^%$ hot to open the windows! Any thoughts about what's causing this???

Seems like if it was my leak, I would smell it consistently, but it's episodic . . . .

I have a similar problem, Mine smells lake gas.
Any ideas??
