Congrats on the eBay bid...Thats a lot of money for LSD. You could have gotten an LSD from 318ti Sports for less than that. I have a source that has one laying around. What are your future plans? Swap or boosting?

""this is the diff that's going to let you cruise comfortably at 80 without buzzing your motor at 3500rpm for hours""
right....80 mph should put you closer to 4000rpms for hours......

The Clubsport LSD wasn't any cheaper, according to DustenT.
Too much$$$ I think it was $350-400 plus shipping. It is an expense part, especially since it had 70k miles on it
The diff I just bought only has 73K miles, and the seller's reputation seems very solid.
Since I have no plans to supercharge or swap engines any time soon, I am just gonna swap flanges and throw it in. Someone else recently said they did this, and it's fine.

Correct, I paid ~$400 for mine. It seem a little pricey until you drive with it. It's a night and day difference. Plus, being able to spin donuts in a 8' circle is priceless!!

I took note of my speedo and tach this morning.
~3500 rpm 74mph
~3700 rpm 80mph
3.46:1 diff 245/40/17 tires (IIRC).

Same here. I was referring to the description for the LSD on ebay. It said no more hight revs at highway speeds. Ya right!!

So, what is your opinion regarding the best differential to use?
I will be supercharging my engine in a couple of months and I would like to cruise at lower rpms at 80mph

If that is correct, I should be able to do 146.4 mph at redline. Well, I guess I don't need to test top speed now. Thanks!

Just got a hold of the mechanic that perform my swap. He stated that swapping flanges so you can use bigger case differential is the fastest most economical way. L8, have fun and keep up updated......

Thanks for confirming that. I figure, put on the M-coupe cover, swap flanges and drive it for awhile. If I decide to swap halfshafts later, half the work is already done.

heh... There IS a price for that sort of thing. Unless you get your tires for free, or have the tires with the regenerating tread that were formulated in the labs at Area 51.

Not trying to hijack a thread, but I figured id continue my quest for knowledge here..
i know LSD stands for limited slip differential...but what exactly does it do?
i know differential is something on the back axle, because i had to change the differential fluid in my car when i first got it...but what exactly does it do?
what is the difference between say a stock diff. and a limited slip one?

I keep an Interdynamics "Made in USA" air compressor in my car at all times. Since I have extra flanges now, I can always swap back the complete stock diff if I have problems.

The diff arrived today. I measured the amount that the flanges stick out from the diff, comparing the stock ones with the Ti ones. The Ti flanges extend outward 3mm less on each side of the diff, measuring from the flange edges to a point on the diff.
I hope I can mate up the halfshafts. Would I need spacers/shims to fill the gap between flanges and the CV joint of the halfshafts?

L84THSKY what the status of your differential project ?

Read my comments below. The stock flanges stick out 3mm more on each side then the Ti flanges. I'm wondering if I need some kind of spacers between the flanges and the inner CV joints to mate the halfshafts.
I'm going on a vacation to Quebec City in a few weeks. I'm concerned about problems if I install it now, so I will do the install when I return. I'll be putting on the M-coupe rear cover too.
The Vaders are going in this weekend.

well, then the "new" diff should be a good deal wider than the original and you shouldn't have to worry about 3mm difference in the flanges as long as they lock into the lock rings in the diff like they're supposed to (in other words, they extend INTO the diff far enough like they need to). the ti halfshafts are longer than the e30 6-cyl ones, i know that for a fact as i've had them side by side.

It really doesn't matter from the halfshafts point of view if the diff is the 4 cylinder body or the 6 cylinder body. What matters is the width of the diff with the flanges installed, measuring flange surface to flange surface. I'm losing 3mm on each side, so adding spacers should resolve this. If I bolt up the flanges to the CV joints without spacers, it will pull the flanges out 3mm each , and have less of the spline inside the diff.
Right now the flanges are seated very nice into the diff, so I don't want to pop the seal out by having the CV joints pull the flanges 3mm each in an outward direction.

My suggestion to you is try to contact Kiley_Sean. He used a 528 differential with 318ti output shaft on his TI. He didnt have a problem with fitment issues at all. I dont know if he used a different driveshaft since he is a M3 swap. Thats shouldnt matter because the mounting point for the 528 differential is the same thus the length for the driveshaft he use is the same.

I have no way of contacting him, he won't accept e-mails. Interesting to know he is in the Air Force. Anyone who can reach him, please have him contact me.
