LSD = Limited Slip Differential

A differential is part of the rear-axle assembly. People swap diff's out for a longer or shorter gearing

If he did LSD, he wouldn't have any memory to recall.

A differential transmist the power coming from the output shaft of the transmission to the wheels. Like someone said people change their differentials to change the gearing. A taller gear will decrease your acceleration but increase your gas mileage, while a shorter gear will increase your acceleration while decreasing your gas mileage.

A LSD, or limited-slip differential, is a device that through a series of clutches or cones transfers power to both wheels. Have you ever seen a car do a burnout and only one tire spins...we call it a one tire fire...? That is an open differential, or a diff with no LSD. Now when a car does a burnout and both tires spin at the same rate of speed then that is a diff with a LSD.
The purpose of getting a LSD is to transfer power to both wheels for better acceleration and hole shots.

I hope that at least some of this information helped you out.

An LSD also aids in traction. If you get one wheel off into the mud or snow and the other is on the dry street you'll still be able to go unlike an open rear end where the wheel that's in the mud will spin and you'll just sit there. LSD is the ONLY way to go.

Or in my case, to upgrade to LSD, and keep the ratio the same:wink:

L8, when you upgraded to LSD did you just swap out your output flanges and replaced your cover?

I haven't installed it yet, but I did swap the rear cover to the M-coupe style.
Ive opened the debate about whether the 318ti flanges can be used with the 6 cylinder diff. From what I hear, the answer is yes.
Follow this thread to see what my plans are:

the ti flanges don't have the contact area the e30 ones do (just to let you know). the e30 ones are longer (inside the diff). i believe constant provided a pic of the comparison in his notebook article of the install. doesn't mean they won't work, but it might be of concern once you supercharge.

That's why I'm gonna swap diffs first, then drive it for awhile. Then work on the halfshaft hybrid/swap issue.

cool. sounds like a plan. your stock shafts should certainly be fine for awhile. what's your projected install date for the supercharger? are you going to wait until after winter?

Yeah, getting cold, and I have school stressing me out. Come January, no more school:biggrin:
Then in the spring it's all car mods.

how do you know if you have it?

1) listed on original window sticker
2) S listed on differential tag (metal tag attached to the differential)
3) jack up back of the car, put in neutral, release parking brake and rotate one of the rear tires ... if both tires rotate the same way, open diff. if they rotate opposite, LSD.

Would the 3.45 go good with an auto tranny?
