I know some people were contemplating a car delete, but wanted to know how it sounded. Well here you go. It is a 22 second video of revving to get an Idea of the sound and a burnout/take off. I hope it helps.

I think I'm glad I kept my cat. The sound reminds me of my friends GSR with no cat. Cool vid!

I don't think it's the deleted cat that makes it so loud, but the exhaust itself. I'm sure it's a straight through system with no resonator.

Cheers,

Cheers,

The cat was replaced with a custom bent pipe. There is a resonator after the cat that was already there. The muffler also was loud and had an aggressive tone before the cat delete.

I think it sounds like a race exhaust. I also think it sounds a little like a straight piped v-8. Especially in the way the tone changes from on to off throttle.

For some reason at cruising speed the exhaust quiets down and does not resonate like it did when the cat was on.

Yeah, removing the cat seems to lead to that metallic-ness. Otherwise, it's all good. :)

My 00' s10 resonated like a rice burner on steroids with a 40 series and cat delete....andy's car times 2 maybe...but the most fun thing was to wind a gear out, ease off, and pump the gas pedal....can you say fireball:eek: I am scared since his car is louder than my 4.3L s10, it still has it's cat, but also has a 40 series flowmaster. I think his car resonated worse before the cat came off though, at least inside of it.

BTW, we scared all the birds away from the BSU parking garage!!!!!
And the Vortec engine does have a really mean tone to it!!!!

It is like free hp for indiana residents...50 bucks is a good deal.

How much of a power gain should you expect?

AlaskaBlue

I couldn't quote power numer exactly because I haven't dynoed it. I did notice a quicker smoother rev through 7k and it had more power espceially up top. So the butt dyno sensed more power.

I guess I could say I noticed as much or more difference with the cat delete, than the performance chip.

I have no cat on my car and it sounds different from that. I have the stock header, Supersprint Racing Resonator and then a Stromung straight pipe to the muffler. I'll try to get a video of my exhaust and post it.

I would love to remove the cat. But the car is my everyday ride, so I would have to pass the smog check. My cat is dead. Now I am looking for a decent used one. I just wonder if any of you have what I'm looking for?

Mine is just a custom bent pipe that replaces it. So it doesn't have a resonator in place of the cat.

Smog checks suck!!!! I pity you, I am pretty sure that you may be able to find a 318 one on ebay. At least i hope you can, or maybe you can one from a different vehicle. Too bad you state is worried about the air....Indiana will prolly pass one before long...If they do that, they will have around 1/8th of the cars in the state from being road legal.
Andrew
BTW, the cat delete in my opinion just frees up torque and not so much hp.

I doubt Indiana well ever get on the ball enought to pass a smog check. Just look at daylight savings time. Farmers don't even have to wear seatbelts.

More than likely, but I am not sure....I'm guessing that since it seems like it does the same job that it is.
Andrew
BTW, I love it when you guys from the UK post "Wankers" as you title!!

I had a FlowMaster 40 put on my truck, way too much cab noise and way too loud. I had it replace in less then 2 days with a 70 and it sounded much better, hardly any cab noise except at 1800 rpm and it has a nice mellow sound that I was looking for. Unless you like lots of noise stay far, far away from the 40's, go with a 70 instead.

Were you running duals? I know mine is somewhat subdued since I only have one exhaust pipe. Mine has a beautiful deep tone at around 3300rpms. Some people have asked if I have a v8...partially because I doubt they have every seen an s10 bolt that quickly. The 70 does have a very nice tone though

So, deleting the cat will not make the exhaust louder? I'm looking to replace my cat, but I will not do it if it makes the commute harsher.

Well lets just say, I have a 97 Ti with the M44... the guy who owned it before me put a Flowmaster on it, judging by sound I'd say it's a 40 series. But the cat is still on it. I LOVE the sound of your car AlaskaBlue. Mine sounds nothing like that so now I'm tempted to delete my cat. The check engine light is on anyway, for "Low Catalyst Efficiency"

Thanks for the compliment. I would be careful about removing the catalytic converter since you have an OBD-II car. Mine is OBD-I so I do not have an oxygen sensor like you. There is a post saying what the oxygen sensors do. Check into it. Your check engine will be on all the time. Good luck with whatever your choice.

I'm not sure if you're referring to the new post about them... but I just wrote that and posted it. I am more than familiar with O2 sensors. Right now I'm just trying to figure out how to modify a production O2 simulator to work on our cars. Maybe if it works I'll market it lol

It would be a good idea to market. I know there are more than a few people around here that would buy them.
