I've read some of the posts on oil. It seems people are saying to use mobil 1 10-30 in the winter and 15-50 in the summer. I'd just like to know why because i'm about to do an oil change in my car. The manual says to use 5-30 in the winter, Mobil 1 does have 5-30, so why not the recomendation? When I go to Mobils website it says I should use 0-40, which seems like it would be good for the winters. (I live in Vermont, very cold winters). I'd like to hear everyones arguments and opinions.

10-30 and 5-30 are pretty much the same if you're running mobil1.

i used to live up in boston (going to vt, nh and quebec for skiing trips), and it really depends on your driving habits which one to choose. if you do a lot of short trips, do 5-30. if you have a half hour commute each way, 10-30.

just depends on how much time you have for the engine to heat up properly.

i have never run over a 40wt oil even in the summer. id did a 3000 mile trip in 4 days, averaging 90 mph and running 100mph+ through the desert in utah/arizona with nary a problem.

I run 10w40 redline synthetic currently. I have never had any problems.
The dealer had me using 20w50 castrol fossil. I never had a problem with that either.

I use 10w40 in winter and 20w50 in summer.
Kinda a leftover from my old car which didnt like pumping 20 weight in winter.
