Thanks Halek and Grex1969

I thought the wheels finished it off nicely, but I think it still sits a bit high, think the next mod will be a 40mm drop all round and get rid of the pea shooter exhaust for something a bit tastier.

The colour is metallic Techno Violet. Its a standard BMW paint colour but is usually found on E36 M3s.

I'm also considering a Hella Angel Eye upgrade for the front, Eurocarparts do them for just over two hundred sheets. Will finish off the front end nicely

If anyones got galleries of theirs, I'd be interested to see them, these E36 compact sports seem to be quite rare !!

There are many track days organised over the country NE section do a Croft one for e.g.

Not sure what the deal is on the Nurburgring trip, I think people have to express their desire to go as costs aren't worked out yet, tho some are organising trips within their own sections (as well as Isle of Man, with no speed limits)

Drop by and have a look, as yet there are no forums for the compact (just a register) so I always send folk over here (my sig pic on the BMWCC-GB is a link to this site)

Fitted the DEPO's today..... FCUKING KNIGHTMARE, ended up using the Avo Meter to work out what was what.

Worst bit at the end of it all my battery was flat! on charge atm!

other than that, they look good. pics to follow.....

Nigel in Barnstaple N.Devon. no farmer or backwards jokes, i grew up on the london /(ahem) essex borders. Inside the m25 is london right?

No Ti as yet, but the a4's going in the trader tonight.

nigeltee
01-28-2006, 10:30 PM
yeah, when i bought it, i was gonna lower it, fit updated lights , xenons, oh, and chip it (easy 180 - 190 brake). Nice.....

But then it needed a new turbo (partially replaced under warranty) then the day after i got that back the cat fell off! (came apart from the new turbo) Again replaced under warranty. AND THEN, i had soaking wet carpet in the drivers and rear drivers side footwells. AAAAARGGGGH!

Not a pleasant 6 months ownership and i have had enough.

Apart from that, they are good.

nigeltee
01-28-2006, 10:31 PM
what a rant. sorry. just hit a raw nerve.......

stormos
01-28-2006, 11:30 PM
heh.

when i first got my compact i took it for a service and it needed:

new rear springs,
front ball joints,
rear subframe mounts,
new headlight washers,
abs sensor.
new rear brake cylinders and adjusters,
exhaust,
oh.... and the air bag light is on.

but its an ongoing project so to speak.....

davep-uk
01-29-2006, 11:11 AM
so Stomos, fitting the depo's was a bitch? hmmmm do i really want them?

stormos
01-29-2006, 11:54 AM
it was only a bitch cos i am fcukin useless ;)

hence i usually use a garage ;)

going to attempt to fit the stoneguard today and a new indicator bulb. man i am doomed!

worst bit is i need to get the headlight beams adjusted asap as they are definetly out. garage tomorrow with any luck...

However, they do look "THE ****" and i LOVE 'EM!

cali-ti
01-29-2006, 03:30 PM
geez ... taking it to a shop to get the headlights adjusted? how are you EVER going to rebuild and install those new brakes? ;)

stormos
01-29-2006, 04:00 PM
brakes i'll rebuild, but a shop will do the final install of the parts. I would NEVER touch the braking system myself as i know it'd fail....

Got stoneguards on now which aren't the pic which makes the lights look slightly foggy but should clear in few days/weeks.

I'm liking those lights stormos, might have to get me some of those. Could you just clarify a few things though mate.
How do you rate the build quality compared to the stock lights?
Do they have a glass frount cover, some of the American ones have plastic which gets all pitted & cloudy.
Also when you get them adjusted, let us know if they work, ie. can you see where your going

cheers fella

stormos
01-29-2006, 07:23 PM
Already i can see they are ALOT brighter and i haven't got a HID kit yet. Len's are glass and the build quality seems good. they fit perfectly where the old one went.

Umnitza fitted the angel eyes and sealed the lens with silicone sealant whcih was handy :)

cali-ti
01-29-2006, 07:25 PM
so what fogged then if they were already sealed?

EDIT: are you going to take it to the shop for the install of the new kidney grills? ;)

cheeky git!!!

the Stoneguard is a Lamin-x sheet for each headlight. it takes a few days/weeks after application for any moisture behind the film created during the application to dry out.

Got it as the only reason i changed the stocks was a stone went through one of them..... so it was a definate must....

ive had a look on the umnitza website and although you can change the prices into £'s how do you work out shipping? did you order them from umnitza direct or through a UK supplier?

cali-ti

dave! get those DEPO lights and rings from umnitza, shipping is about $80 i think i paid. they put a low value on the box too. They look the ****! Pity i got a ring out :( (waiting for replacement atm)

3 screws on each projector light allow them to be switched from LHD to RHD.

Hey,

whats the deal with the DEPO lights? how do they differ from the uk projector headlamps? Is it because they come with angel eyes? if so, i answered my own question.........

PS. the ti sport i am looking at has orange front and side indicators and clear rears. whats that all about? i thought they came out of the factory with clears all round. Am checing the vin again too as the hpi came back not matching the vin i put in, to the reg on the car. The reg does come up as a ti compact though.

rear drums? brake drums at the rear? i dont understand.
poor stormos has a 316i ... not a 318ti. poor guy, he has drum brakes in the back. luckily he'll be fitting the 32x vented brakes up front.

stormos
02-04-2006, 10:54 PM
316i strangely sell for more than the ti's here ;)

UK compacts didn't come with projector lamps is the first difference.

The DEPOs are basically a replacement set of headlight as a base, they are cheap on their own - about $150 a set. The Predator Chronium rings i had as an option were $170 ish and come with lifetime warranty.

DEPOs tend to come set up for the US so you have to remove the back of the light to reveal the projector assembly. there are 3 screws around the projector itself, loosen all 3, turn them to the other setting, rescrew and you have UK spec lights.

Left Boro in '99. Was there for 7 years.
I think a lot has changed since I was there - Albert Park has had a makeover I think. The Mela is quite good if it's still there.

Hi guys,

recommended to come here by Rhys. Saved my life changing the air con micro filters. Knowledge Base also a great help in confirming how to change oil and plugs. As you can tell, I'm useless at DIY, but learning! Got fed up being ripped off by dealers. Just bought a year 2000 316i SE with the 1.9 litre M43TU engine. Makes ordering replacement stuff awkward because that engine was used in the E46 316i compact, too. EuroCarParts sent me the wrong air filter, but got it sorted out. I've had the car a week, and am going through all the bits. It was supposed to have had a full service by the (non - BMW) dealer before I took delivery. However, the oil was black, the plugs were probably 3 years old, the micro filters looked like the originals, and the air filter was about a year old. Doesn't inspire much confidance, so I'm going to look at EVERYTHING over the next few weeks. It's pretty much stock, on 16" multi spoke alloys. I'll get some photos up soon.

Oh, and I'm in Scotland, near Dundee.

Richard.

So is the bavarian board more uk?

Oh lads i have a set of wheels i had pre bought for this project as i am looking to get some wheels and coilovers on it as soon as i get it. The wheels are no longer needed, m3 e36 wheels, in a sparkling silver powder coat, i bought them like this, a few imperfections in the coat, but pretty mint, all centre caps etc present.

I don't know where to put them up apart from ebay .. 8 x 17s et 40. I was looking somewhere around £370, do you lads and ladies think thats reasonable?? Reason for selling is a friend offered me a set of BBS 17s RC 2 piece from the 328i sport, and now the same lad has offered me 3, 8 series BBS splits too. i just need to find another. Similar to philly on here with the red compact. That looks so right!!

cheers for the info and help all.

Will do.
Just to give you or anyone else some info about the work done on the car:

Shocks were in the worst condition I've ever seen so new lowered springs and shocks all round (not too low, just enough to make the car look better)

Front:
New pads, callipers reconditioned(new seals etc and painted), removed any rust underneath and repainted with fresh under seal. Front bushes and ball joints etc look ok so they were left.

Rear:
Rear suspension etc removed, removed any rust underneath, treated and repainted with under seal. Rear beam bushes replaced, rear brake pipes replaced, new handbrake cables, callipers reconditioned(new seals etc and painted), new discs, new pads, new handbrake shoes, diff painted and filled with new oil, all suspension/drive parts rust treated and painted (except roll bar), new heat shield as it was missing, new abs sensors, new suspension top mounts and gaskets, any missing clips replaced.

plus other things that I cant remember. Just in the process of fitting a new drivers wing and replacing the gear linkage bushes as the gear change is sloppy. I also have a pair of 328 callipers/carriers which have been reconditioned and painted plus new vented discs and pads for a brake upgrade but haven't decided whether to fit them or not.

I bought it for my daughter to use but the insurance is too expensive for her and I wasn't going to pay for that as well.

So is the bavarian board more uk?

Yes. It was the forum side of the official BMW Car Club GB until we decided to break away (won't go into politics but they wanted to make it members access only - they didn't even own it) so it's now called the Bavarian-Board with access to anyone who wants to post.

We need more compacts on there

The sport is fairly hard coz of the Mtec suspension but mines still def comfortable i certainly wouldnt say it was over hard- Might be worth checking to see if a previous owner has changed any of the parts for a harder after market set up. As for the bushes- def a common thing to go and will need doing at that mileage if not prev done- same with the ball joints, anti roll links etc etc...
