File updated 18 October 2007

This is a fairly common question asked, so maybe it's about time we got together a database.

Please list model year, package, options, year purchased, and amount paid. Feel free to list other factors such as location, condition, extras, etc. It will help make this as useful as possible to prospective buyers.
- my apologies for being obnoxious, but it is vastly important that you note ALL of these things. After updating the file I'm noticing that people aren't putting in price, or year purchased. These are critical! Please PM me if you've made any changes, as I'm not going back through and checking the database against every post in this thread.

If you would rather add your information anonymously, PM me and I can simply add it without your username attached.

I will try and make it as clear as possible that these are not hard numbers, but just a truer indication of the market than say, KBB or Edmunds.

Thanks much.

EDIT: please leave location info if you are not in the US, and it is not noted in your profile. Exchange rates are nice too (thanks dodj).

This file will be amended as needed. You can view it as an Excel file or a PDF document. I recommend the Excel file, as you can re-sort the list by model year.
You can download an Excel viewer here (http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/xlviewer.aspx)
or Adobe Acrobat reader here (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html).

Model: 1996 Ti sport package
Purchased brand new in 1996
Price: Approx $35,000 Canadian (Approx $30,000 USD by today's exchange rate)
Current mileage: 140,000 Kms (87,000 Miles)

If I remember correctly, this was the most loaded (and expensive) ti offered at the time as far as options go. When I think of what you can get now for $35,000 CDN from Bmw (nothing!!), it was a relative bargain.

1998 Sport with M-package, sunroof, 6/8 speaker stereo,
Purchased December 2004
Paid $14,500 Canadian ($12,000 US)
79,500 km (51,000 miles) currently at 120,600km (78,800 miles)
Came with set of winter tires on BMW "bottle cap" rims
The car came from Winnipeg, Manitoba, I flew out Christmas day to pick it up and drive it home to Calgary about a 13 hour drive.

The car was a little dirty, inside, but well maintained, overall very good condition. The rear hatch cover was damaged, I think the hatch was closed on the cover. It has all been repaired now.

Best car I have owned.

97 Active 5 spd.
Bought it a year ago this month for
$7,000. Great shape, near flawless paint/exterior, never even a minor accident. With all the mods in my sig (plus all the original parts), but needed new tires, still needs new belts and the headliner is beginning to sag.
83,250 miles when purchased, just turned over 90k last week.

FWIW, I consider what I paid fair —*not a great deal, but not a rip off. The sellers are good friends of mine, so we worked out a price that was fair for both of us.

Year/Model: '97 5sp Alpine white
Date Purch: Sept 2005
Location: Boston Area
Price Paid: $4,500
Mileage when Purchased: 132,000
Current Mileage: 134,000
Options: ASC+T, m-tec sideskirts (no sunroof, no cruise control, no OBC, steel wheels - about as basic as you can get)

Needed to have the front grill and hood repaited and some basic mechanical repairs other than that it runs great. Given about 1K in repairs and the mileage on the car it was a fair deal.

Put some 235/40/17 AVS Sport tires on the car and that really improved the handling.

It's got the "bumped up" sound system, and 6 CD in the trunk (though that doesn't work since I swapped out the head unit), sunroof. NO ACTIVE options like cruise, heated seats, keyless entry, etc.
I think I have the original paperwork.
223K miles now. No majors issues.
Another window jumped the track, taking it in next week.
Paid about $29,000.
I love this car.

Price Paid: $4,520 (knocked the guy down a ton [list was like $7k or some ridiculous amount, got him to $4800 before I even drove up and looked at it] for some little stuff, small pwr steering leak, brakes about 30%, stuff like that)
Mileage When Purchased: 137800
Current Mileage: 137800
Options: all the active stuff... cruise, pw/pl/pm, heated seats (the fully cloth ones--I like cloth more though), sunroof, 10 speaker h/k (I'm really quite surprised by the stock system-it sounds awesome and I'm picky too), crappy 10 spoke 15's though.

10 speaker h/k (I'm really quite surprised by the stock system-it sounds awesome and I'm picky too),

If you have a H/K sound system in your ti that isn't stock, that would've been put in by the original owner. Only two stereos were made for them one being alpine and i think blauinkput is the other.

Does anybody need this right away? I'm swamped with work, and would like to put this off until after finals.

I'll likely churn it out in a fit of procrastination, but if somebody is relying on this I can make it a priority (while procrastinating).

just because it doesn't have a brand on it, doesn't mean that's not the manufacturer. bmw doesn't make the audio in the car, they buy from other manufacturers. pretty sure it was listed as H/K on my sales tag.

This is all news to me that there was an H/K option to the ti. I have the original window sticker at home, but I think it just said 10spkr premium sound system. I'll have to doublecheck when I get home.

1998 318ti Sport w/ Cali roof, MSRP $25,900
= purchased in Germany through military sales program in 7/1998 for $21,900
= was wife's daily driver 1998-2001
= shipped to U.S. in 2001 w/ lots of AC Schnitzer & euro parts--my daily driver
= DASC & UUC flywheel installed 2003--still my daily driver w/ >95K miles until...
= 9/2005 bought Porsche Cayenne SUV--Tiptronic (aka slushbox) easier on the left leg for the stop'n'go commute, and more space for haulin' more stuff; TI now the weekend racer and as my wife likes to say "CarBoy's toy"

I am in a very fortunate position in life where I could afford a newer, nicer car. Every time I think about selling the TI, however, I know I will regret it. Whenever the new car bug bites, all it takes is a track day or drive in the mountains with the TI to remind me that this is THE BEST CAR I WILL EVER OWN!!! Car & Driver said it best when the Club Sport was introduced back in 1995, and it's still true today--"...95 percent of the fun of an M3 can be had with the 318ti...for less than half the cost..." It doesn't get any better than that, folks!

$12000 in 2001 with 54k miles.
OBC, sunroof, all the other stuff that comes with an active (15" alloys, etc)
Probably worth about a grand now with the hail damage. But 135k miles and never looked back. Blew diff at 110k miles and replaced with 3.73 lsd. Great car. Would definately buy again.

The ad.
1997 BMW 318ti in good condition. Original owner, 104K miles. Metallic blue with tan leather interior. 5-speed manual. New radio. Sunroof. Garaged for all but one year. Engine runs perfectly, great gas mileage.
Includes 4 additional snow tires.

The bad:
Small crack in windshield, airbag light lit.

Picking it up in 1 week. $5100

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v651/Blufrog2/bmwdriverside.jpg

The airbag issue is a sensor under the passenger seat. This is what I was told by the owner as he was told by a mech. Any thoughts? Not to hijack so please PM with any info.

Thanks
This will be my first BMW experience.

If anybody can figure out how to post the file without having to download it (viewed in browser) that'd be radtastic.

There's some missing data, and it would be easier for people to check it that way.

EDIT: see first post.

now this may or may not work since M$ couldn't figure out how to create a nice html file to save their life, but i think excel has a "save as" feature to save as web page, does it not? depends on your version likely, but 2003 does.

you have a mac? could print to pdf and then post it in your gallery, although this wouldn't be a huge improvement. it's small enough now that you might also be able to screenshot and post that in your gallery.

Yeah. Doesn't really help including the new purchases since the market is all used. Maybe for depreciation calculations, but who does that?

SO I'm confused...................... M sport, technic, club sport? I love the car! but i dont know what i have!!! a little help would be nice... thanks!!

Leather, 5-speed, M front fascia (with ugly gray fog light hole covers), LSD, 10-spokes
Excellent aesthetic condition

Non-functioning airbags
Made a knocking noise when off the throttle and turning left. Dealer couldn't figure out what the hell it was, turned out to be motor mounts.

At first was $6300, after airbag issue was discovered he wanted $6000, after noise was discovered, $5800. Went out the door for that much.

The car was just sitting in a neighbors drive way for about 4 years, never moving. I finally got it off his hands after about 2 years of trying. The body was in appsolutly perfect condition, yet to find a ding. I had to redo all the brakes and went with e46 brakes in front. I have replaced a good amount of stuff and probably spent another 2,000 on evrything. I couldnt be any happier with it exspecially for only spending 3 grand. I am just waiting to see how it is in the winters though, michigan isnt exactly nice to low cars.
I think the car is a base with all the options.
Added by previous owner: b&b exhaust, lowering springs, rolled fenders, k&n cone filter, and strut brace.
Added by me: m68 wheels, e46 330 front brakes, ucc brake lines, ucc rotors, and anything that needed rplaceing. but still a work in progress.

I bought mine 4/05. I paid $4k for the TI, actually. I was headed down south to pick up a 92 325 (I believe it was a 92). He called me when I was in between his TI, and the 92. So I decided to swing by and check out the TI, because Ive seen one that was repo'd, and I liked it, they just wanted like $8k for it, and it was tore up. So I th ought $4k was a steal.... Til I blew the head gasket, and had to basically redo the whole engine.

125,000 miles
7,000 after 2 month finance arrangement
Bought in Feburary 2005 from Santa Monica Auto Center, California

Dealer said it was a "M clone". I knew that was rubbish even with not knowing what model it was. I originally bought it because it was a BMW hatch and the first one I had ever seen. Love the car; but, less than a week later, the engine had to be replaced. So the motor only has about 15K on it.

1998, auto, leather, sunroof, professionally lowered (correct bilsteins, APEX springs, camber correction, etc), M3 wheels w/brand new 215x40/17's, nicely upgraded sound system (new head unit, subwoofers, amp...I'm clueless about this crap). Quality recent respray that is not a factory color but very attractive (South florida sun killed original clearcoat). New headliner. Professional window tint (wife thinks it looks like a baby gangsta car...lol. No accident history...2 barely noticeable door dings, one other noticeable by fuel door but not too bad. Immaculately maintained for 120K miles.

Purchased on evil-bay for $5300 + $200 plane ticket to Miami + $90 gas to drive home + $1.80 for gasket to solve oil leak + $225 for tranny service including pressure control valve ($75) that solved a sudden tranny shift problem.

So....$5816.80

My point is don't expect the purchase price to be the end of getting the car "right". Still, I think I got a decent deal. Too bad its gonna be my step daughters first car:(

Extra costs - $200 (flight to Boston + rental to drive to Dartmouth) + $120 (gas driving the car from MA back to FL) + $30 (food) + $60 (hotel room one night - I spent the other at a friend's when I stopped over in pittsburgh) + $600 (title, registration, taxes in FL) = $1010.

Total - $6710 + 3 months off of my life from worrying that I'd blow up the engine (it was my first time ever driving a manual, I kid you not [the seller gave me a 20 minute quick lesson])

156,000 miles
Purchased 10/9/07
$1400 (fixer upper)

Missing M-tec rear bumper diffuser
Missing foglights & lower front grill
Headlights only turn on when you turn on the left turn signal
A few dings
Broken antenna
Headliner needs replacement

COULDN'T BE HAPPIER!!!

Given the minor issues, the engine, tranny, suspension & 99% of the body seem to be in great shape & the tires are new.

I bought it to fix up & sell for a quick profit, but the ride home may have changed my mind. This is a FUN car to drive!
I haven't driven a manual trans car for 20 years...I forgot how much I enjoy it.

I think this will be a keeper.

Files have been updated. Please read the first page--a number of you are omitting critical facts like model year, mileage, and even PRICE!

Do NOT edit your post, please PM me with updates. I'm not going to check the spreadsheet against every post to see if anything has changed.

Also, current mileage and mods are USELESS for the purpose of this thread. We care what you've done to your car, but not here.

I just bought my 1995 318ti (September 2007) for $3500.
It is the 1.8L 5 speed. Aftermarket wheels, that look killer, newish tires, a set of brand new snow tires. Cloth interior, A/C needs a charge still, a couple tiny rust dings but otherwise non faded black paint with some spider webs, but it is a '95. My trusted mechanic (Lindems, Milwaukee, WI) knew the guy and had just tuned it up, changed the oil, new brakes, and he TOLD me to buy it! It had one rear end accident so it had a salvaged title. I think the suspension was upgraded at some point, at least it handles, and looks like it has. Only 74K miles. No spare key, which is aroung $65 from the dealership. Cruise, moonroof (sometimes sticks)
I did have one gas line leak already, but other than that it runs/drives great. I love that the 318's in black with cool wheels are a perfect synthesis of refined fun handling german car, decent mileage, enough oomf and handling, and kinda punk rock all at the same time.

Well, after reserching the Ti, I finally found one that had everything I wanted with only 126,000 miles on it. It is a '97, black, with traction control, automatic, sunroof, 10 spoke alloys, and gray cloths seats. It has the 10 speaker radio and the on board computer that tells you Miles till empty, avg speed, temp, and time. It is a blast to drive. I was tired of rowing my own gears, so the automatic is just fine for me. I paid $4200 cash.

First, thank to everyone on this board. I lurked for weeks reading about problems and upgrades and prices. I'm glad I can give something back!

I bought mine 2 weeks ago for $4000. 121,014 on the ODO. Bought it from a former BMW tech who replaced the radiator, fuel pump and front calipers, pads & rotors. He threw in a set of rear pads, a trans cooler, fan motor he had around and the stock rims (was sitting on some Fondmetal rims at the time) all for the flat price. No issues, no lights on. Fresh oil change, new plugs and wires, K&N air filter. Bought in Philadelphia, PA.

The condition is excellent. A few very minor dings in the exterior. Frankly I couldn't notice until I waxed it. Inside is also very clean. Headliner is sagging, as is normal after 11 years.

I've gotten the exact same reaction from everyone that's seen it,

THAT'S A '96? THERE'S NO WAY THAT CAR IS THAT OLD!

I couldn't be happier. Thanks for keeping up such an informative site. I shopped for months before I settled on a ti, and I'm so glad I did.

Happy Trails.

Not sure if you're still updating this.

Year/Model: 1997 Sport (black on black)
Date Purchased: March 14, 2008
Location Purchased: Gretna, NE
Price Paid: $4500
Mileage When Purchased: 179,626
Options: Sport package, sunroof, 10-speaker sound system

condition: Very good. I'd say exterior was excellent, only one small dent, a cracked fog light, and a different set of 16" BMW wheels (not the normal Sport rims). Interior was nearly excellent. Driver window regulator needs replacing as does the shift knob, but everything was very clean and showed minimal wear. Mechanically it was very good. Needed front ball joints, valve cover gasket, and two power steering lines replaced. Engine looked fairly clean for a '97 with 180k miles.

Year/Model: 1998 TI with Sport package (gray with leather black interior )
Date Purchased: Feb 8, 2008
Location Purchased: Reading, PA
Price Paid: $1,500
Mileage When Purchased: 100,000
Options: Sport package, sunroof, $1,500 sound system: $300 Radio, 2 crossfire Amps, professionally installed, $300 compact sup in ported box (pure bass)

condition: Depends. Most people would say horrible. The sunroof was stuck open. Both windows were off track, and did not roll up. the interior was damaged (just the headliner, the driver side panel, and the speakers in the door, and in the back.) the car was also in an accident, and the door is smashed in (but just a little) and the front right armature was bent a little along with the front right rim.

- There was a mouse nest in my air filter, which i pulled out. there was a chimp monk living ontop of the fuse box.. which got sucked into the belts of the car... the radio was stolen out of it, but replaced when i bought it, but the dash was messed up.. my shifter is missing the leather.

but.. other then that.. the car is awesome. i fixed the sunroof for $9.00 myself. i am fixing the headliner. i replaced both rear speakers with 15 inch loud speakers and upped the amp to a 500 watt rms amp..

ehh.. but $1,500 was a steal.. :-)

1997 318ti Base, Calypsorot-metallic, black cloth interior (for now), 5 speed

139k miles

paid $3700

She's in pretty decent condition. Everything works. The paint still holds its shine and sparkle but has some scratches, rock chips and a few (2 or 3) hail impacts on the roof. Nothing that can't be buffed out and finished though, so she should be back to looking like new in no time :)

Most of the specs are listed in the sig. I have had a couple cooling system problems, and have cleaned it up a lot. In all so far, i've put about $250 into it for maintenence and repairs. Paid $2750 for it. It does have it's querks, but I knew that when I bought it, and it's a great buy for the price.

I have an Alpine white '96 318ti with the "Active" package. Options included the onboard trip computer, sunroof, remote keyless entry, and the Alpine 6-CD sound system with 10 speakers. It has the 5-speed manual transmission, and color-keyed rocker panels. I bought the car in 2003 with 56,000 miles on it in Coronado CA for only $9,200. I have kept the car bone-stock except for a K&N air filter which was already there. . . It's a hoot to drive, too. The car now has 125,000 mile on it, and has NEVER had single mechanical malfunction of any kind! It still has the same radiator, water pump and head gasket, power steering pump and rack, same clutch, fuel pump, alternator, etc. that came new with the car. The only problem I have encountered so far was a droopy headliner at 100,000 miles, (which I replaced myself) and a troublesome driver's side window regulator, which I had rebuilt by a BMW dealer. I was recently told by my mechanic that front suspension bushings and motor mounts may be ready for replacement in the next year, but are not gone yet! I have put one battery, one ICV valve and two sets of brakes in the car since I've had it. All around the BEST car I've ever owned (2nd BMW) and I've had 22 cars in my 57 years. Simplicity is what makes this car so bomb-proof! A few of the BMW bells and whistles are present, but not enough to become headaches as the car ages. Simple, fuel efficent 4 cyl engine that regularly gets 28-32 avg MPG. The secret to it's longevity is the complete maintenance regimen I maintain. ALL fluids get serviced on time, which makes a HUGE difference in reliabilty. I'm keeping this one til I can't drive any more.

1998 base model, morea green, automatic, heated seats, no fog lights, no trip computer, no cruise control, steel wheels. Bought it at Keller Brothers Ford in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, in December, 2010. Had 101K on the odo. when I bought it. The car had lived its life in the suburbs of Philadelphia, owned by a college professor who gave it to his daughter who drove it awhile before trading it in on a Ford Focus (go figure). Had been maintained at a BMW dealership. I called them, and they were nice enough to give me a service history. I would say that the exterior is 9 out of 10;the same goes for the interior. We all like to think that we made good deals on your cars, and I am no exception. I think that the sales manager either stole the car from the girl, or didn't bother to look at the ti market when he set the price. I got him to come down $200 to $4800. Of course I had to fly up to Pennsylvania from my home in Texas to pick it up, but really I had a ball doing that and "bonded" with the car on the 1400 mile trip home. Originally, I didn't want a base model, but I kept coming back to this one based on the pictures on Autotrader and the good CarFax report. I put a $500 non-refundable deposit down and jumped on a plane. My apologies for going on and on, but I like to tell my "car story."

Yes, I did fly into Harrisburg. I didn't become acquainted with this site until I got the car home. You have a beautiful state. I really enjoyed driving it east to west on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, though lord knows how much I paid in tolls. Drop by if your ever down Texas way.

It was going to be scrapped, it was a co workers daughters' car. She drove it 400 miles after she bought it and the cooling system blew....It sat for 6 months, and I heard about it and gave em a few bucks for it. It is a mechanics special, it just had a JY motor put in it (the one that blew up) and everything was shot...

They paid 3400 and drove it 400 miles....

It happens...that's why I get concerned when some of our young enthusiasts take the plunge on very high mileage ti's with no service histories. I admire their enthusiasm, however, and a car poorly bought can be a good lesson for the future.

I hope i'm not falling into this trap. I'm about to make a decision on a 96 ti with 180,000 miles on it. what should i look for in the service histories?

198,XXX miles, five speed, active package, no body rust, dirty cloth interior, AC works. Sat for 1 1/2 years due to blown head gasket/coolant leak. Starts and runs (kinda) drove it 7 blocks to my house. I'm the third owner and have the first two owners maintenance records.
$355 because we could not jump start it and had to buy a new battery...
I open up the engine next week to see what the damage is.

Nice pick up, I need to find something like this. You didn't mention the year but if its a '95 and you happen to need a spare motor, I got one for sale in the classifieds. Hope the car works out for ya...

Bought a white 96 ti, LSD and style 27 wheels with 174k miles and overheated engine for $75. Bought a used engine for $400 and got it running in 3 weeks after replacing the radiator and coolant hoses. It has 198k miles now and still runs like a champ.

Just picked up a '95 cordobarot metallic, manual, gray leather interior, 97k miles for $1900. Runs great, A/C blows cold.

Not the cleanest body, but no rust and the chassis is straight. Should be clean charcoal on black before too long...

Edit: I've just liked the 318ti for a while and never really looked at the different trim levels, I just jumped on what felt like a decent deal. Turns out the car has an LSD, factory keyless entry, and cruise control. Seems pretty well equipped.

my Cordobarot is already in this thread so here's my track car and soon-to-be beater

96 sport, Arctic Silver on black rhino cloth, manual, 144k

minor dings and rust on body and wear in interior, salvage title, bad brakes, infamous plastic coolant fittings recently replaced, all stock except for aftermarket CD player

$2250 private sale in 2011

96 active, Boston Green on tan cloth, automatic, 120k-ish miles

coolant leak from plastic fitting on the head, tires shot, battery's shot, sunroof leak caused mold on headliner, lots of mouse poop in interior, no stereo, bad ball joints, good amount of rust, dents, scratches and 90% of clear coat on the hood is long gone, judging by when the inspection expired it was sitting for at least 6 years

$350 at an auction in 2013

95 318ti club sport w/LSD 225k $2600 purchased 10-18-14
the best record keeping i have ever seen runs like it has 50k lots of maintenance records and a few up grades like Bilstein sport shocks, DEPO HID headlamps, cat back exhaust, ect. will be a great SCCA HS autocross car next year. Does have a little rust just gives Little Red Ridding Hood some character. Time to hunt down those transmission killing Mini Coopers.

Paid $5k even for a 98 base model with 100k on the odo three years ago. Adult driven and dealer maintained in a suburb of Philly. Was the cleanest example I could find on autotrader at the time. Flew up to Pennsylvania from Texas and drove it home. Had a ball doing it . John

Mine is a base model, black with sunroof
Bought it 2 years ago $3000
Very clean California car.
Changed out plastic cooling fittings etc, then changed over to evans waterless.
Been great ever since, then changed wheels, lower control arms and front shocks. Mobil 1 everytime.
Now has 179K and could prob still get $3000, worth every penny, can outrun many little POS machines out there.

FYI running 225/45 -17 can't go any lower in NY area without bending rims

I bought my ti in March 2014 for $2150. 1995, Base, 100k miles, 5-speed. Needed plenty of little things done, but it runs like a top and has no rust at all. The car's exterior has a couple dings, faded paint, foggy headlights, a cracked marker light, missing undertray under the engine, and missing foglight covers. Maybe a 7/10 since most of the stuff is easily and cheaply replaced, but it needs love. Interior is missing a couple trim pieces, torn arm rest, loose shift knob, stained and lumpy seats, and a sagging headliner and poorly repaired a-pillars. 7/10. Again, most of the issues were pretty cheap and easy to fix. Upgrades and bonuses: It came with some nice OEM BMW rims and bilstein shocks, OEM roof racks, upgraded stereo and speakers. It had fairly low miles and it was pre-OBDII, which was important to me since I will be swapping the engine and I live in NY state.
