I originally planned to buy the DASC in spring but I am interested if it is that significant of a discount. The group buy would be $2,850.00, what does the DASC normally go for?
ZeroG

The retail price on the kit is $3350.00 + shipping. So the group buy is 15% off.

I find it pretty bad that they are selling the thing and then decide to redesign after it hasn't been on the market that long and still charge such a high price for it. It is apparent that they should have done alot more work in the research and development department before they released the kits forsale.
The kit that they were selling before was using a nissian frontier supercharger that can be had on ebay for $150 or less and then rebuilt for a couple of hundred and then cleaned and powder coated for under $100. You then have a supercharger that is pretty much brand new. They then modified the stock intake manifold by welding a plate to it and called it better than a DASC manifold because it was "a tubular manifold". I honestly think that the DASC is a much better designed kit and it has been proven to be a good kit by many users.

What is that big black plate sandwiched between the supercharger and the intake manifold? It looks really cheezy. I never asked this question, but will my Racing Dynamics upper strut brace clear the supercharger? If not, then my Cold Air Injection AND my strut brace won't work. I'm pretty sure my strut brace would clear the Downing Atlanta Supercharger.

Errr...When you spend $2k+ for ANYTHING, it better look nice. I just looked at the ebay auction for the their supercharger. I'm sorry KO, but it doesn't look finished. The DASC looks like it belongs in the engine bay, like it's OEM equipment. The KO kit has a big chunk of steel as a mounting plate. The plate doesn't look good, period. It's not trimmed to fit and unless it's stainless, it's going to rust, along with the intake runners. It's too dark to be aluminum. Take a look at the two kits side by side:
THE DASC USES A FACTORY-LIKE INTAKE MANIFOLD, IT LOOKS FACTORY
http://180customs.net/v-web/gallery/albums/BMW/Random_009.sized.jpg
THE KO KIT USES A HUGE, UNTRIMMED PIECE OF STEEL TO MOUNT THE MANIFOLD TO THE SC.
http://i21.ebayimg.com/03/i/05/74/36/97_12.JPG
Most of the KO kit isn't even shown in the photos! No fuel rail, no intake. How does the throttle body fit in there? The bypass valve looks cobbled. What happened to all the intake sensors or the DISCA valve? The DASC has special adaptors for ALL the relocated sensors.
L8, I'll be interested to see how your car runs and VERY surprised if your check engine light isn't permanently on!

L8 I would like you to check out the supercharger when you get it, if it is New like stated, the rotors will be a good sign of telling if it is indeed new. also check to see if it was painted or if it is new uncoated aluminum. If it was new there would be no need to paint it.

I just left a message for Joe (KOperformance) to call me. This whole thing is turning out to be some crappy slapped together system. I have yet to see a picture of a complete system installed. Where are all these customers who already put this supercharger in. The pictures he shows on his website AND his Ebay auction all show unfinished designs. Did you see that crappy plate they wedged in between the manifold and the supercharger? That is NEVER going on my car looking like that. Also, the supercharger sits much higher than previously shown. That means goodbye to my strut bar.
No worries, I can always call American Express and dispute the charge.:_pissed:

Now listen to the voice message he left me.
http://www.geocities.com/triumph1518/supercharger.wav
The voice message says "Customers" were complaining about the design. But his own words above say he never sold any of the earlier designs to customers, only in house people. The more I hear, the less I believe. Can this guy even show us even ONE complete install, that is working without any problems:confused:

I'm starting to wonder if you are the first person to buy one of these kits. That would explain the great deal you got on it. If you are talking to KO, I would ask if they have a way to fool all the sensors so you don't get a check engine light. Also, you might want to ask about seeing a dyno chart with AFR. I don't remember if KO posted one or not, but their fuel pressure regulator looks really small. I wonder if it cabable of boosting the pressure high enough to keep from running too lean.

I think you're right. So to protect myself, I'm gonna dispute the charge. Put him on the defensive to explain himself. He must think we are idiots. He's probably running this business out of his garage. The pics he recently showed of the installed unit, show a car with multiple parking tickets. That can only mean the "test" car sits in the street. Only reason for that is he has no place to store the car at his so called business.
The DASC is starting to look more and more like the only true option. I'm gonna make sure this aggravation and expense falls on his shoulders. I'm not paying one penny for a system that doesn't work.

I agree and not just because I have one. Downing Atlanta has been making the SC kit for 1.9L BMWs for a long time. Prior to that they made the Sebring SC kits for Miatas. They know what they are doing because they have been in the business for a long time and know exactly what works and what doesn't. You end up paying a little more for the quality, but you get what you pay for. Let us know how everything works out. KO can probably have a good kit if they just put some more time/work into it.

In all fairness, like you said, the Ko system will eventually turn out ok. But he is using me as a guinea pig. That was never the deal. Atleast he is "supposedly" listening to customers complaints and makeing changes. Of course he says he has no "customer complaints" so this is a catch-22. I'm not in any real hurry to install it, if it will be a problem, I just don't derserve paying $2000.00 up front for a "work in progress". I'm willing to bet he doesn't even get his opening bid on this Ebay auction. That means $1699.00 is too high. Every time he says it's being perfected, the pictures appear to look worse.

I just got off the phone with Joe @ KO. he says the wedged plate between the supercharger and intake is the "improved" design. He says customers complained about the original design being too difficult to install. So basically the original design looked more tidy and similar to the DASC, but was harder to install. Then again the DASC is assumed to be a lengthy install, and KO is trying to make a simple plug and play install. I'm not gonna settle for a slap together design, that looks like ****. He says I can always use the original design which he posted pictures of when we first heard about this kit. I want the best of both worlds, I told him. a system that looks professionally designed, and not too hard to install. Otherwise he can keep his kit, and return my money.
If this Supercharger deal goes sour, I'm gonna change directions on my intended upgrades. My LSD is ready for install. Then I would take the money from the supercharger, and buy a lightweight flywheel, M-clutch and chip for the engine.
That way, if I went ahead in the future with either the DASC or the KO, I have everything in place.

i'm not sure how that plate makes things easier, but maybe i'm missing something. unless they're just selling these kits to kids, they should keep in mind they're selling kits to people with BMWs. owners of BMWs usually buy them because of the design and quality workmanship that goes into them. as you've so eloquently pointed out, a big black rectangular mounting plate doesn't exactly do it justice, regardless of how easy it (supposedly) makes the install.
your plan sounds reasonable and similar to what i was looking to do (UUC flywheel + m5 sprung-hug clutch setup) to prep the car for the SC.

The DASC is NOT HARD to install! It just takes some time to get everything is there right, re-run your fuel lines, etc.... It is not difficult be any means. How would one design be easier to install then the other? I don't get it. You still have to rip the intake manifold off and put a new one on. I think the real problem is that the original design used a factory 318ti manifold that they modified to fit. So every kit they sell need a new manifold to modify. Where is someone going to find a supply of factory intake manifolds like that? So their solution was to make their own intake runners so they didn't have to come up with a factory manifold for every kit. I might be wrong, but doesn't that make sense?
L84THSKY
11-17-2005, 06:56 PM
Bottom line is if the DASC is only $800.00 - $1000.00 more, I might just go for it. That price may only be true in a group buy.

He mentioned that you can buy the kit minus the actual superchager, but you would have to call him for that. The reason I say this is because I had called him quite a few months ago, when I first heard of him on BF. Anyhow I told him about 318ti.org and all the potential buyers. Soon after that he had a SN on here. After reseaching some things, I called him to try and get a deal on a kit minus the supercharger. He was a un-eager to make that deal. He then made me an offer of $2100 for the kit minus the supercharger. I told he must be out of his F'ing mind. I mentioned the deals he had posted and he claimed to me that those deal were for refurbished kits. That they weren't totally new, so that's why he could make those offers! So I told him no deal, I said, if you come up with a better price, then call me. Like last week, I get a phone call from Joe. He's ready to cut me a deal. He said $1100 for the kit minus the supercharger! I never really thought he would call, but there I was. So I told him that I had heard that they had redisigned the kit. He was very suprised, he asked how I knew that, because they never even posted that on the website! (thanks L84THSKY) At this point, I think he sounded kinda desperate to make a sale, so I told him I would get back to him as soon as I made a decision. After seeing that Version 2 kit, I'm leaning more towards craptastic than fantastic. Just thought I would share this with you guys.

So you're willing to buy the kit, knowing it looks like ****? Looking like ****, is only the cosmetic issue. Whether it works or not is STILL not certain.
This was only when I had heard of the new version, but hadn't actualy seen it. Once I saw those pics, that kinda told me that this was some 2bit operation. The KO version 2, is much like looking at Feces, no matter how many ways you look at it.................it's still looks like ****! plain and simple.

this just seems to be getting more and more shady...but, yeah, the KO kit looks retarded compared to the downing one. I mean it just looks like a hack job some 8 year did in his garage with his dad's tools. I'm really leaning toward a DASC kit now. I figure if they don't take the time to streamline the exterior then it might be a little negative foreshadowing for things to come...

I think this all can be summed up with this: you get what you pay for. When it comes to something that could potentially destroy your car, I think it's best to stick with the big players. Why do you think people still buy Dinan parts, even though you can buy knock-offs for a tenth of the price?
I recently spoke to Jim at Downing Atlanta about a low boost problem I was having. We spoke for a good hour about what I should be looking for and what I should try to isolate the problem. Everyone else that has contacted DA has said the same thing. Those guys stand behind their work and will do whatever it takes to make things right. Jim said that it was nearly impossible that some part of the SC kit had failed. If it had, it would be a first, their kits are indestructible.
FYI...the low boost problem was actually my fault. My map sensor wasn't calibrated correctly, a quick look at an analog boost gauge showed that I was getting full boost. (on a side note...I'm an idiot)

There are people on this site that have the DASC, but no one with the KO system. I'm not here to knock either one for the hell of it. But with no history, the KO deserves alot of skepticism. No final pictures, lousy communications, and even the half ass pictures show the product in a very bad light.
Hey, I'm the guy who dropped down two G's, I should be bragging about this thing:confused:

I'm thinking about either participating in a group buy, or buying a used DASC. If anyone is interested in a group buy or selling their DASC, please reply on this thread. I'll have more info on this soon.
