I realize this is hard to examine, but check the intake manifold runners:

That does not look like a typical (US version) 318ti intake runner??!!

In the engine bay of the wrecked Ti, you can see a set of intake runners taht do not look like the US version's Tis.

It's a M43 SOHC engine.

It's a M43 SOHC engine.

Would it be possible to swap that manifold to ours? Any different?

Maybe some of our Euro friends can help us out and answer the question.

Scroll down to the middle and he tells that the m42/m43 share only the head and crank, so the intake manifold is diffferent, but we don't know if it is better or not.

318tibimmer has a link to make your hood look like that of an e46 3 series.. although it requires cutting and welding **** back. but it looks bad ass when it's all done.

If the heads are the same, then what would prevent the manifolds from being interchangeable?

My German's a little rusty, but I believe the red car is the one he wrecked that neccesitated the purchase of the blue ti.

So für alle die sich jetzt fragen warum nur nen 316i?! - Ganz einfach als ich mit meiner E36 Limo einen nich selbstverschuldeten Unfall hatte musste schnell nen neues Auto her.

My rough translation:
So for all of you that are asking yourself why only a 316i? Simple, I was in an accident with my E36 sedan that wasn't my fault and I had to get a new car quickly.

Without knowing what engine the red car has, it's going to be hard to figure out which intake manifold that is. Incidentally, he goes on to say that another reason he picked the 316 is because he doesn't have the money to mod the ti and put gas in a 6 cylinder.

It's a M43 SOHC engine.

From poking around on www.realoem.com, this manifold only shows up on the earliest models of the 316i with the M40 engine. When the switch to the M43 happened in the mid '90s, the intake manifold was changed to one very similar to the M42/M44 with the two-stage runners and the DISA valve. Based on my understanding of how our manifolds work, and the fact that this one is for a smaller engine, I suspect that there would be no benefit to putting this part on our cars. Not to mention the constant CEL from not having the DISA valve hooked up. Does anyone know the hp and torque numbers from the M40?

... Does anyone know the hp and torque numbers from the M40?In brief, not quite enough, but I only owned one. From the 1993 3er brochure, written when the engineers were still in charge:316i: 73kW@5500 rpm, 141 Nm@4250 rpm

318i: 83kW@5500 rpm, 162 Nm@4250 rpm
all with two-valves per cylinder and standard unleaded(!).
