Production-car wise: [acceleration / top speed]
M3: 4.8s / 155mph (governed, supposedly)
M5: 4.5s / 155mph (governed, supposedly)

Surprisingly, the Z4 M Roadster doesn't even get close.

"Stock" taken loosely, the McLaren F1 (BMW-powered) or the V12 LMR (race-only).

Good that you quantified it to cars though, otherwise I would have brought up the K1200S (2.8s)

There is the S54 M Roadster 0-60 4.5 seconds 1/4 in 13.1

These cars came with very restrictive exhausts and intakes to take power down form the the M3's 333 to 315. The respond to those mods well. As my sig states I am saving/looking for a really good condition S54 M coupe.

Numbers reported to have actually been faster, but they didn't want the S54 M Coupe to blow the e46 M3 out of the water on paper.

I forget right off hand what the #s are but the new M5 and M6 both have 500hp... they both have the same 0-60 numbers, but the M6 is just a hair faster in the 1/4.

The BMW powered, British-built F1 from McLaren International, Ltd, is arguably the fastest and most expensive production car ever made.

The specially commissioned BMW engine allows the driver to be centrally situated in the cockpit, affording a more equal weight distribution. With it's 627 normally aspirated horses pouring through a bespoke six-speed transaxle gearbox, the ultra-light F1 leaps from 0 to 60 mph in a matter of a few scant seconds.

The McLaren F1 holds several records, including the highest top speed (240.1 mph) and the fastest lap speed on a UK circuit (195.3 mph).

The owner of the shop that works on my car has one and I've driven it -> w/Dinan intake and exhaust = rocket. I hope you get one soon.

The McLaren F-1 top speed has been beaten... But, it was the fastest in the world for quite a while.

No, I don't remember who; some small sweedish-made hand-built car or something. Odd name, VERY limited numbers, V8 powered, higher top speed than the F-1 (by about 1 or 2 MPH).

I think Bugatti Veyron might be the fastest and most expensive car rite now. With a top speed of 253 MPH.

If you want to see the british T.V. program presenter James May taking the Veyron to it's maximum 407 kph, at the VW testing track, go to Youtube and type Bugatti Veyron and TopGear into the search tab. Awesome.

The veyron IS the fastest and most expensive production/street legal car. The Swedish Koenigsegg CCX is the V8 powered thing that beat the Mclaren F1. However, both the Veyron and CCX rely heavily on forced induction, so the Mclaren F1 powerplant still is a very special piece of machinery.

Good point. The BMW engine in the F1 is normally aspirated. The Veyron has four turbochargers, on an eight litre W16. That makes the BMW engine something special indeed, to achieve it's performance without forced induction. It is probably much lighter than the Bugatti engine. It would be interesting to see which car would be faster round a racetrack, rather than just in a straight line.

But the Veyron is, I believe, the pinnacle of automotive engineering.
For now. With the financial resources available to VW/Audi, it should be.

I went to BMW to get an oil filter today (by the way, I can't figure out how to get the housing off... stopped by autozone to get something and they didn't have anything that could do it), and saw 2 M6's, one coupe (I took a close look.. CF roof!!!) and a convertible.... beautiful cars.

Dad has a S52 M Roadster and it runs 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, I can imagine that the S54 would be a little bit quicker. He has a low-restriction exhaust that gives it around 20 dyno hp, since the stock is ridiculously restrictive.

what about the M1? I know it would be beaten in a straight line, but around a track? I know it's dated, but it was the pinnacle of its day. Plus it only has a 6 cyl!
