Hi,

As my intro to this site, I'm currently looking around for another BMW to use as an auto-x car, and have been looking at the ti's. I saw a '98 sport recently that had had its keys lost, and replacements made by a local locksmith. Though the new keys open the doors, the car is now having problems starting. Here's my questions:

- are these keys "chipped" keys? My e46 and my late lamented E39 have the chip keys, which are expensive to replace, since you can only get them through BMW NA. My guess is that they are not.

- If the ignition switch is messed up (I don't have the history of this car yet), how much do you think it is to replace?

Any info appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, the ti has coded keys as well.

So, you need the dealer and the title (with your name on it) to get a key made. It is expensive, and takes about a week to get to your hands.
