What harness are you using? Can you take some photos of the wiring?

It won't let me we upload pictures. But the more I research the more it sounds like EWS and since that link you suggested tofollow iv been trying to find other links of how to disable or bypass EWS. Like can I just take the module out from behind the dash? Also it's the M50 vanos manual harness

ZEK 08-29-2017 01:49 AM

Had a good cruise to Frankenmuth, MI for NOWO with BlueBimma. Perfect weather and a lot of unique cars. This Audi was perfect. 410 with Getrag on highway is obviously not ideal, but cruising 65-70 in right lane isn't bad. Never need to downshift if that is a plus. BlueBimma's 6.0 V8 is almost perfect.

Josh - Upload some pics via imgur or another hosting site. Are the motor/harness from same car? Did you undo any of the fuel pump wiring you did? No you cannot take out module. I doubt grabbing a tune with EWS disable would solve the issue. What have you done currently to the wiring?

It's with sadness that the motor has been obliterated. BMW enthusiast neighbor took around the block, which normally I have no problem letting others drive. It's a swapped Ti nothing fancy. He was moving in 3rd and went to 2nd, barely touched brakes but let out the clutch. I saw tach go to 7500 and keeping climbing. Motor was done for. Metal on metal instantly. Car died. Got home, drained oil. Metal bits and the spring from one of the main seals. Leaked out the front main seal as well. Pulled plugs. Pistons have marks from hitting valves and #6 smacked the spark plugs shattering piston. I don't think anything is salvageable. The full ARP kit might be bent as well. Trans could be ****ed. Very lucky he did not lose it and put into pole. Car will get rebuilt with another built 6 most likely or something similar.

NOOOO!!!

That sucks!! I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully this doesn't kill your motivation for the car! Thanks for keeping us up to date.

ZEK 09-12-2017 09:55 PM

The car will live. I am searching for a new M/S52 longblock and swap it all back together. I wanted to go boost on old motor since it could handle some, but those plans have been shelved for now :frown:

BlackBMWs 09-13-2017 12:59 AM

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. I'm sure you will get it back together. Does the BMW enthusiast have an S52 to spare?

No we are working on a value of the motor right now. If any builders could chime in on the cost to replace/value of the motor it would be appreciated. He is a good guy and just want to be fair to each other. I've been looking but almost impossible to find a street motor with 20K on the bearings/all internals. The quotes from shops to rebuild have been high but engine building isn't cheap nor is any of the internals. Nothing can be reused:frown: Also cylinder #6 did not have fun.

Good you can work it out as opposed to the other guy who destroyed Tony's motor.

Good luck!

Wow sorry to see the carnage of a bad money shift. Frankenmouth fun little town for a foodie, my ex lives not far away in Saginaw. So needless to say I have been there lots of times.

ZEK 09-17-2017 01:46 AM

Yes I am thankful that he owned up to it rather then having to battle it out in court. It's better all around and I hope by next week we can come to an agreement. I'll update the thread when I've figured out what next motor wise for the car.

Frankenmuth was a fun trip. Nice seeing all the older Volkswagen in a Bavarian setting.

ZEK 10-11-2017 03:20 AM

Well I can post an update. I picked up a local S52 dropout with 130K on it roughly. Looks pretty clean. Motor will get torn down. New gaskets/seals everywhere and converted to OBD1. M50 valve cover and coil packs. Internally will remain stock. I did get all IWIS Racing timing chains and guides. Hopefully paint the block this weekend and finish taking parts off. Then get swapped by end of the month!!

Hey ZEK, why go obd1?

Is it just easier because you where OBD1 before? In general I don't see any advantages OBD1 vs OBD2?

Btw congratulations on the s52!! Its going to be fun!

Since the car is setup for OBD1 it's much easier. Basically just swapping the long block and changing a few connectors. Swap tunes and off it goes.

I really wish the 2.8 would have gotten onto a Dyno. I'll have the tune set for 6800 on this motor. Old one was 7100. Should be pretty similar motors with maybe 20 more wheel hp. Old motor had full ARP kit in which I had planned for boost. But plans change. I'm just trying to keep my costs down for now.

Ya that makes sense, 6800rpm is stock s52 limiter right?

Put it on the dyno when you can !

E30-M3 10-11-2017 11:08 AM

Don't take the limiter of the S52, it's there to save the engine the longer stroke can cause issues in upper ranges. Glad to see you are breathing new life into it.

OBD II would give you the ability to check faults in running issues easier. I might swap in OBD II into my e30 in the 332es.

Yup, I also prefer OBDII have all the tuning options and more sensors to check faults.

@E30-M3 - did you ever post up your e30 332es? Looks like fun!

*Not to hijack the thread.

E30-M3 10-12-2017 11:02 AM

No it is tucked away with M3 now. I had to reserve spots for them at a body shop I use. It needs paint desperately.

ZEK 10-13-2017 01:18 AM

Limiter on new tune will be 6800 which is in line with more conservative tunes from major tuners, but agreed there is a limit to these stock motors. I prolly only went to redline on old motor a handful of times. I drive pretty slow for the most part. Stock redline is 6500. And IMO it's not worth trying to go back to OBD2. I had been satisfied with 1.

Also we need e30 pics!!

ZEK 10-26-2017 03:53 AM

Took head off old motor. Still working on the new replacement so taking time. The trans bolts near rear main covered in oil, so rear main leaking badly from crank walk confirmed. Cylinders 3-6 piston hot valve and keeper fell out of head. RPMs went wayyyy to high. But it gave confirmation to what engine builder (Tony) had said happened. Hopefully S52 in by Christmas. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b6541fab8e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3156d66903.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b5bc77b8d1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3c191c8b2c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...34df928706.jpg

Took cams out old head. She gone. Will get scrapped since there is scarring on parts of cam from metal fragments. Did some calculations and motor went to roughly 9040RPM. Hopefully S52 done next week to get put back together. No real upgrades while out. Just Lemforder E46 M3 mounts. Picked up thread chaser kit and will be doing all the bolts over weekend. Got new lock nuts etc from BMW. Using new hardware is so much nicer.

Motor done. New IWIS race chains, mix of Febi/BMW stock guides, all new gaskets, head was taken off and decked. Covers bead blasted. Looks good. Motor sat for a while so exhaust cam was turned as well. Lots of rust up top that needed cleaned.

Tried to get in yesterday but could not get pan to clear. Just going to take out trans and do it like last swap.

From your sig you have an S52 swap right? I need to get this fired up and see how it compares to the 2.8 M50. That was a good motor. Have you looked into the 3.0 that some make from M52 Block and and I think M54 rotating assembly bits? Also motors and trans in. I dented nose panel and bumper I just painted, easy to touch up but my own stupid fault not paying attention. I put it in with the trans mounted, gets pretty tight. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...19b0efcf9e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...51cce5d308.jpg

I do have a S52 Swap that I picked up from Adam last year. I have M50, M52, M42, M44, M62tu and the S52.

I can comment from how my butt meter feels from an acceleration point. Night and day for sure. My DASC for the M42 and M44 is collecting dust as I have less incentive to install them. The M42/DASC is the one that is waiting for a Slicktop shell to surface.

Trans, I did swap to a 5sp ZF and E34 M5 PP and UCC LW flywheel. 8.5 lbs I think, over the 26lb dual mass. Just have to go back around and figure out brakes as the Hawk HP+ are just not enough just now... I can launch just fine. Just have to stop as quick... [emoji15]

Well got the car basically back to how it was. I’m leaking a little oil either from back of pan or rear main seal housing. Just enough that I’ll want to fix it. Other then that all is good for 0 history S52. Using cheap Castrol GTX 10w-40 and Redline additive it’s very quiet. Small lifter tick with first startup but gone within 5 miles. No coolant leaking or temp issues. Getrag seems to be fine. Now too tidy the rest of it.

Rich - lightweight flywheel will be next once this clutch goes. But that maybe a while.

I WANT WARM WEATHER!!!

Car has sat for winter due to the atrocious Michigan roads. 40 miles put on since the swap. Been stocking a bunch of parts for preventative maintenance and to get it done.

Parts to install when it's not 6F outside
Siemens/VDO Pump
Vaico strut mounts (Don't need but I'm taking e90 hats off for stock e36. Cheap enough)
E36 Spring perch
OE Spring Pad
Elring strut gasket
OE Strut reinforcement place (Thanks BlueBimma)
Febi flex disc
Rein center support bearing
Vaico driveshaft centering bushing
UUC 27MM Swaybar
Febi rear wheel bearings
FAG front wheel bearings
Bosch FPR
Full rear brakes, soft/hard lines if need be, rotors, pads, calipers
FEQ E30 6cyl halfshafts

The plan is to have any real wear item be replaced within the last 20K/original swap timeframe. This includes bushings, hoses, fluids and things that could leave me stranded. I am going to be having it looked over by a shop since the pros can see what I can't. Replace any hard/soft fuels lines if needed. Need warm weather to paint too. I want to get back to driving it as that's what I like it for. It sure isn't a garage queen.

You don’t need to touch the trans. Maybe change the clutch but an M50 isn’t that much more power over M42 for the clutch.

Obviously you could refresh Trans bushings if you wanted to.

Progress has been much slower than I’d like. Zender E30 been taking up time and life work been eating at free time but it’s still a work in progress. I’m hoping to be fully done by August first. I’ll be having a shop do some of the stuff I don’t have the tools for (stupid rear wheel bearings) and have them do the rear brake lines. There are some hard lines I’d like replaced and I’m not that good with the bending tool for brake lines yet. Don’t wanna do it on the daily.

It also ate some power steering stuff causing atrocious steering. It will feel at times there is power steering midway through a turn. So the car has been sitting unfortunately for most of spring. Since I plan to bring this back to a daily I have purchased a new steering rack from RackDoctor, AAE reman pump, newer lines already on the car, new reservoir, tie rods, steering shaft and u joint. The e34 solid joint maybe failing for some reason. It only has about 20K on it but I’ll inspect when it all comes down. Steering has no feeling on center now. It’s going to BlueBimma to get a look at on the rack once done.

I still have small things to do on the motor, the 2 tensioners need installed and the new OE cam sensor. After that all the sensors on the motor are new and any timing piece. Should be good for another 100K. I’ll be chasing oil every 3 to keep as much life in the bearings as possible. Oils cheap.

Once steering is fixed I have clean stock Z3M coupe springs and the pads to jack the rear up. It’s way to firm and squirmy with the HRs on it. I will also put in the new GKN 6 cyl halfshafts. Wheel bearings done around same time. if anyone is curious the new GKN axles don’t have the hump in the center. I would imagine advances in metals/casting (someone correct me if it would be a cast method, forged?) no longer need the hump.

For the amateur body work your local paint shop can whip up some base coat. For me it was $30 for the pint of basic PPG and $6ea to place into aerosol cans. Makes a quick paint of bumper trim extremely easy. Just use PPE!

I’m hoping I can update this post with this thing done. It’s had many set backs but I’m hopeful this summer can prove productive. Cheers all!

Glad it is back on the road! I have a situation maybe you can help? I am removing automatic trans from my 96ti and installing getrag 250. With s52 and M3 size clutch which clutch slave, master and throw out bearing to use? We have a problem with clutch bled and solid stream it seems pedal only comes to any pressure as it is very near the floor. Wondering if 318ti bearing is taller? Maybe someone has used 250 getrag with s52 in a ti and could help.

If you're using an M3 clutch use and M3 slave and PP. Everything else can be any e36 6cyl. I am using the Getrag 250 behind this motor. 0 issues, i just change the fluid every other oil change.

Follow the steps here to bleed slave.

To completely bleed the slave cylinder you have to do the following after using the pedal-pump or pressure bleeding methods:

1) Slowly pump the clutch pedal to build pressure to push the brake fluid through the line and fill the slave.
2) Unbolt the slave cylinder from the gearbox
3) Attach a tube from the bleeder screw to a small bottle
4) Hold the slave cylinder so that the bleeder screw is pointing straight up*
5) Open the bleeder screw
6) Push the rod/piston all the way in to the slave cylinder
6) While holding the rod/piston in, close the bleeder
7) Repeat steps #4-#6 two or three times or until its too hard to push in when the valve is closed
8) Ditch the tube and old fluid.
9) Bolt the slave cylinder back in place, be very careful that the tip of the rod lines up with the indentation on the fork
*Very important

Got the new steering rack, tie rods, reservoir and pump in. In this case the AAE replacement was a LUK pump instead of the ZF which was one I had. I am not sure if that will always be the case or if they will reman what they get back. I see the early e36s came with either a ZF or LUK pump. The later ones appear to all be ZF without the threaded housing but the pump itself seemed to be the same as earlier ZF, same mounting holes and pumping pressure by both.

Also I replaced the E34 solid coupler with a new stock rubber one. Feels much better for street driving, I'll take the preciseness hit.

Did the work at BlueBimma's house. His 6.0LS behind mine with N54 swap in progress for red.

Does anyone know the cause for code 1234 / Speed Sensor. It will pop up after about 20 mins of being cleared and then car pulls timing and runs like crap power wise.

I am going to make sure the wire on back of cluster did not come loose but it seems it can be a variety of issue. I have a new fuel pump I am going to replace old one but I doubt that's the issue.

Motor burns some oil and steel leaks  It'll be making it's way down to BlueBimma for some final touches and fixes. Going to have some rear brake lines done before the back end is completed. Then body shop to touch up underneath some surface rust. Z3M Roadster springs installed on back. Really made the ride much nicer in MI.

All in all progress is slow and i've only out about 1K on the S52 which is mainly to fix itself. Hopefully I can drive more in the fall.

Happy New Year everyone! 2019 is stacked with plans. Finishing this piece is one of them. First thing is I wanted to get matching front 6cyl struts in Koni STR variant. Next were less aggressive lowering springs, bought a 6cyl Vogtland kit (rears will be for sale). Next was all new hardware. Some ain’t pictured but you can see, basically going to make it quick strut change, unbolt old in new. Rest of front suspension has max of 20K on the control arms so it still feels amazing. Painted the reinforcement mounts etc.

Not the biggest fan of the Mishimoto coolant reservoir so I got a stock Behr tank, cap, brass screw and Turtle Laboratories aluminum stock mount. New Rein hoses to complete. Then I can have stock setup and no shroud.

Next will be driveline. I have new Guibo, CSB, centering bushing, new GKN axles, wheel bearings etc and the full rear brakes to do. After that have some engine stuff planned bit that’s time dependent. I’m extremely busy On finishing an E30 as well but I’m feeling optimistic this year.

Car drives fantastic now there are just a few things I’ve wanted to take care of. New fuel lines, pump etc. Anything that may fail and leave stranded be replaced with OE. Should get the car on the dyno this summer as well.
