California Top Trim rubber molding #? Hey all, I was trying to find the part # for the rubber molding trim that goes on the outside around the california roof. Anyone know? |

Part#12 I ordered one from Germany. $74.45 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...98&hg=54&fg=05 Double check it's the one you're needing tho... |
Thanks BlackBMWs for replying, I can't find a picture of the part but the trim i'm talking about is highlighted in red. The outer most rubber trim, over time/age the corner shrinks (the red arrows) and water can get in leak inside the car. Yup I received mine on Friday. Like in your pic, it is the seal between the Cali top and the car. |
Thanks again BlackBMWs for the verification. Quote:

No worries, glad to help out. What year is your top? Are you doing any maintenance to it before installing the new seal? |
my car is a 1996 (bought it at 90k and now 102k miles), much like that picture haha. it was leaking on all 4 corners. As a user on here said to use sealant to fix the leak and it did but only fixed the back corners. The front are still leaking and I think it's probably due because of clogging in the waterways to go down to the wheel well. For now it only leaks a little when it rains hard, but i park on a hill which stops the leaking too. I was thinking to clean up the sealant cuz I thought the fronts were due to the gasket but suspect its just clogged. Only maintenance i did with the top is re-lubricate the rails, before the gears were struggling.. hoping it didn't damage that "gear" i keep seeing on this forum. With the new lubrication its sliding good with out the gears struggling. I'm not sure what other maintenance is needed to the rooftop other than lubrication, which I'll need to recheck this weekend or so. Quote:

So, I was replacing the rear drivers speakers on the Cali this weekend and noticed the drain tube had flattened against the stereo amp. I mean flat. I know water would have backed up there. The drain hose was hard and ridged. I have other tops where the drains are a little more pliable. I will use an air gun, examine and drain test all four drain hoses when I get around to dropping in the replacement top. I have the vert top treatment to apply and will dry lube all the guides and sliders. The motor I have to install has intact solid gears, so, I should be good there and now I have a new seal for the perimeter to hopefully address any leak areas. the other thing I wil do is put a set of hose clamps or at least some nylon tie wraps to ensure the drain hoses are snug and don't come off. I plan to take deinstallation pics as well as installation to add to the DIY base for the tops. Good luck! |
looking forward to the deinstallation pictures then! I have the pdf founded on here that gives instructions on how to take it off, but who doesn't love more pictures? Quote:

I think maybe the leak is from the tubes and just backs up when it's pouring, but i think to get to it i need to drop the roof lining, just never got around it |
I'm just waiting for warmer weather before I replace the next cali top seal. Its pretty easy task if you don't have a headliner. Checking the tubes using a air tool can help, just be cautious to not put too much air pressure throw the line. |
I’m looking forward to see this^ |
I've got a few. Redoing the rubber gasket helped out my leaky top. My hoses weren't clogged. I only used one zip tie putting them back on. I guess two is water tight (they do that on boat lines or something?). https://i.postimg.cc/52BFFSN3/IMG-20160220-160658.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/05XG8nbK/IMG-20160220-160531.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/GmGvx1zv/IMG-20160316-202302.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/02LpSNG8/IMG-20160316-204253.jpg |
Thanks for these pics. Was changing the seal as simple as it sounds? |
Yes. Just don't do as Bradestar has done. There are a lot of torx visible there and 2 PHILLIPS screws which are not, at the front corners. I missed those screws and fought it a bit to get it out, in a rush. I thought that it had been silicone and/or possibly glued by the previous owner....that is until I heard the craaack! I tried JB weld plastics, but you can guess how well that worked out. ….ended up having to source a whole new insert. Don't forget those two screws! https://i.postimg.cc/8CkQc595/DSC-0168.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/Qx5rnvcX/DSC-0160.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/GmxnbYMV/DSC-0164.jpg |
California Top Trim rubber molding #? Ouch, thanks for sharing! Instead of zip ties I wonder if hose clamps might hold tighter Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro |
Looks like I will be ordering a new outer seal as well. My 96 California had a massive leak on the driver's front corner. Pulled the headliner and found the drain tube completely slipped off. Back on with a clamp. So that no longer leaks. BTW, i used one of these: https://media.napaonline.com/is/imag...ompany/3776423 Works great, puts equal pressure all the way around the hose. Still had a leak though, but far less water than before. Did lots of testing involving pouring water from a bottle into different parts of the sunroof drain channel. ZERO leaks, all drains working perfectly. Okay, so let's go out one layer. Poured water into seal between outside of sunroof frame and roof itself. BINGO. Same place as shown in the diagrams earlier in this thread, so new seal it is. Diagnosing leaks is sometimes easier than we think it is, just go one layer at a time. Until I pull the sunroof frame and replace the seal, a little bit of black silicone is keeping the water out for now. |
Got to do this on my 318ti Cali/Open air edition. Leaks like a sieve on both A-Pillars, guessing both drain channels have broken as air lined and no crap came out... : ( |
