Fog Lights

I'm thinking of adding fog lights to my '98. Anyone have any experience with this upgrade? Is it difficult?
Wiring just scares me...

BleMW 04-17-2007 09:30 PM

Fog lights are like a 3/10.

pnosker 04-17-2007 10:35 PM

If you wire it correctly it can be a 5-6/10

Speaking of foglights and wiring, the previous owner of my ti had installed some crap-tastic generic fogs. He snipped off the oem plug that goes into the back of the fogs to wire the generic fogs. Now I need the plug for my new fogs.

Does anyone know the part number or where I can get the plug? I haven't had time to go junkyard searching, but I assume that would be one of my best options.

pnosker 04-17-2007 11:45 PM

I had the same problem. Instead of getting real plugs, I searched my house till I found 2 cords (like the 2 hole ones that go into an Xbox) that fit the stock lights. I sealed them with silicone and they're staying in there forever.

I had to use crimp on round socket connectors. (the female to the "bullet plug") and crimped them down some to fit the connections on the back of the fogs

I can't believe everyone has had to do work-arounds like this.

There's has to be someone out there selling these things. All e36's use the same plug!

Your very simple statement is still above my head. I'm sorry, but I don't know what a 3/10 is. I also don't know a 5 6/10, as the other post references.
I don't mean to be a dimwit...
Do I have to find the headlamp wire and splice into it to run the fog lamps, or the running lights... or, is there a simpler way to patch into and existing 'lighting terminal' to distribute power to the lamps?
Do I have to buy a mounting bracket or any other hardware, or do I just pop out the plastic cover over the hole and slide it right in?
And no one can make any "over the hole and slide it right in" jokes. I already thought of that...:)

Mad-Machine 04-19-2007 12:19 AM

he means.. it is a 3 out of a score of 1 to 10.. with 1 being the easiest and 10 being the hardest.

Also, mounting the fogs is easy. Two bolts to hold the mount in place in the bumper and then the fog itself snaps into place

it took me like an hr to install new fog lights and new wiring in my car, i also didnt run the wires through my firewall and i didnt use the pull switch oem part

pnosker 04-19-2007 01:53 AM

You must have run it through the firewall somehow... or else how would you control it?

And yeah, I used non-oem stuff so it looks after-market and was much easier. I got a much nicer looking switch in Taiwan though that's black with a red LED at the top instead of a stupid green clear plastic thing that doesn't fit the lighting at all.

Mad-Machine 04-20-2007 01:09 AM

I used a stock TI headlight switch. pops right into the dash like the stock Ti fog light switch does. This also allowed me to wire up my rear fogs (had to wire them in from scratch) First pull is fogs.. second pull is fogs and rear fogs.

What is interesting. the Stock Ti fog light switch is simply a single pull version of the headlight switch. Even the connector is the same (with less terminals). I picked up my switch and the connector on ebay for like $20.

GhostRyder 04-21-2007 03:49 PM

i ran my wire for the fogs along the door, i can take apic later, but it was alot easier then looking for a hole in the firewall

It didn't take you only an hour to retrofit OEM fog setup. I'm still in the process, cause there are so many wires.

I have a complete OEM kit that I have mostly installed. There are three harnesses, and a sh!t load of wires. Most of the install is straight forward, but I still can't figure out where three of the wires go. If you have no experience, and are trying to do an OEM retrofit, better take it to an expert.

and when some one gets PO'd. Hit 'em with the Hi beam.

teaches them every time not to mess with German Tech.

Install help

ok i just got the fog lights for my Ti the problem is that i cant seem to find a way to connect the brown and grey write. The diagram in the instructions is for an M3 model so its hard for me 2 wire it up any help? Thanks

aceyx 06-16-2007 11:20 PM

Brown is usually a ground wire. Where is the grey one coming from?

elchicano 06-18-2007 04:03 AM

Fog lite problem still!

2 Attachment(s)
Well i managed to connect the brown and grey wire into the car where the headlight switch is at. But as soon as i did the green fog light switch turned on. But it turns off whenever i turn on the headlights. I checked the instructions and did exactly as it said. The instructions are at the bottom 4 you guys 2 check it out. See if u know what the problem is cuz i sure dont.

elchicano 06-18-2007 04:15 AM

more

ey i talked to my brother and he said it could be that the fogs are not getting enough ground which is causing it to light up this way. Is this true?

L84THSKY 06-18-2007 05:36 PM

I seem to have two relays laying around as part of the fog light retrofit kit. Can anyone confirm the part # of the fog light relay? One of the relays is silver metal, the other is black plastic.

GhostRyder 06-19-2007 03:22 AM

i set mine up completely different than the instructions.....but my light i my switch also burnt out cause it was always on

elchicano 06-19-2007 04:55 AM

Finished

Well i finally found out what i did wrong. But it was also confusing because the wiring kit had the brown wire as positive and the grey wire as negative. But at least im done check it out. Wat u guys think?
