DISA Valve: difference btw 96 & 97 manifolds?

My DISA valve has been rattling for sometime and now I'm tired of it.

First off, I checked realoem and it shows that the same part # is used for our entire line of e36/5 for just over $200.
Did a quick google search for parts and I ran across BMW of South Atlanta stocking 'adjuster units' for $100!! Sadly the part numbers do not match. It turns out that it is an item that has ENDED. It also is for cars that were made 11/1997 and up.

My question to any of you is the difference in the intake manifold? What could possibly change so much that this part can only work for models 11/1997 and up, but then have a new DISA that works for all models?

I have a few different intakes, they all look the same. It might be a difference in the disa itself. Though I didn't notice any difference in the ones I have.
