Spare tire help

Hi all,

Has anyone figured out a replacement for the original spare tire?

I am the original owner of my ti and recently went to fill the spare and its shot. Bead has given up due to dry rot and will not hold air. I thought I could just go buy a new one but no one seems to carry that size. 125\90R15

Tirerack.com told me its discontinued and they don't carry a comparable size. I thought about a traler tire of similar size but they are $150. and not the EXACT size so not sure if it would fit in the carrier? Found a few used spares but they don't seem to be in any better shape than mine being the same age.

Has anyone done anything differently to replace the spare? I thought about putting a tube in mine but not sure how the bead would hold up even with a tube?

I know the odds of getting a flat might be rare and I have AAA, I just feel more comfortable being on the road with a usabel spare especially since my wife drives the cost most of the time.

Thanks for any input.

I carry a full size spare in my cargo area, but that's not really something most people are willing to do.

Someone on another forum says this is the part number for a replacement. 36-12-2-153-271. The description is "TIRE CONTI T125/90 R ". He claims he confirmed it is a 15" tire.

Thanks Cirrus. I just went and punched that number in at the BavAuto site and it comes up as a special order part for $95. so maybe they can get it?

Resurrecting an old thread here. It's 2013 and my spare is shot. I have staggered M3 DSII's. A can of fix-a-flat and a compressor are in the trunk. There are times when I'd like to know I have a spare. Vendors including bavauto are telling me it's a discontinued tire. There seems to be no solution. I do not want to put a projectile in the trunk. Anyone have ideas for a space saver, possibly fixing it down with a mounting bag?

3struck,

That is an old thread! I even forgot about posting it!

I never did find a replacement as everyone told me the part number was discontinued too. I found a few at junkyards but they were in no better shape than my own and they all wanted $75.

So...I put a tube in mine and am hoping I never have to use it. It holds pressure so it might work in a pinch. Not the best solution but I could find no other way than going with run flats on the car!

Good luck my friend!

Mike

I decided to use a full size wheel/tire, which barely fits behind the back seats, but I have a strong chain attached with S hooks to a metal tie-down mounting point located near the side storage compartments to secure it.

Firestone also makes this size spare for earlier Mustangs (2004 and before). There's more info on the net.

Florida Mike,

Thank you and everyone for your responses. I am going to remove the spare, since at this point it serves no purpose and keep 2 cans of fix-a-flat in back until I figure out how to safely mount a spare in the rear. The chain idea sounds good but I'll have to look at mount points. We do regularly travel on highways with it so I think it is a good idea to have a full spare. Does anyone know if it is safe to put a 15" oem wheel as a temporary spare on the car with the rest of the tires being 17" DSII? I wouldn't want to waste my time if it's a bad idea. I can't see how it wouldn't be a good temporary solution. Thanks to all.
