Help determining a differential Hey all, I have two differentials that are already removed from the cars. I thought they were both open, but one might be posi/lsd and i wanted help determining. The reason I ask is one spins in the same direction while the other spines in opposite directions. No S on either. The one in question is a 4.44 from a 97 auto. The tag reads 444v7092 When you spin one side, the other sides spin in the same direction. From the previous differentials I sold, this should indicate that this is posi/lsd. I dont have the vin of the car anymore, its been awhile since I had it. The other is a 3.45 from a 96 manual, and it spins in opposite directions. Any reason why these too differentials act different but neither indicate why? Is there a way to tell the difference if I open them? if so, what am I looking for? thanks in advance |
Excellent post by CoolJess about what the different diffs look like when you take the cover off. That'd be the easiest way to be certain. http://www.318ti.org/forum/showpost....4&postcount=91 |
Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for. -- Update: Despite the two differentials turning different, opening them reveled that they are both open. I would say that that the direction of the shafts spinning is NOT a good way to determine if a differential is open or LSD. The lack of any attached wheels, which causes resistance, could have played a factor in this but everyone should keep this in mind while buying an LSD. If the differential is removed from the car, you should look for an S or open the case. Thanks a lot |
