heater fan only works on high

On my '96 with 189k, heater fan suddenly works only on high.

Pelican has an E36 article here that seems to fit, so I bought the blower fan resistor, but darned if I can find that puppy under the dash. I've pulled off the driver's side under-dash panels as in the article, but there's nothing remotely like that so far as I can see.

The options are that the article doesn't apply to the ti, the part is elsewhere on the ti, or I'm frigging blind. Any guidance is appreciated.

I have an E36 service manual. Not sure if it also applies to our 318ti.
It says,
1. Working under right side of dashboard at side of IHKA, unhook linkage, then remove air distribution motor
2. To remove the blower resistor pack from the IHKA housing, remove mounting screws.
3. Detach electrical harness connector
4. Press retaining clip away from plug to release plug.
5. Installation is reverse of removal.

I believe that the resistor is next to the cabin air filters under the hood.

Slade13 nailed it. Remove the driver's side cabin filter and it's attached with a single Torx15 screw. PITA to detach from connector if you have large hands, and unfortunately I don't have Trump's phone number. Sad! I got the replacement from RockAuto, and while it now works, fan speeds are 2-3-1-4 rather than 1-2-3-4. I can live with it.
