My Manual Transmission Swap!

So I'm finally going to get around to doing a auto-to-manual transmission swap. Thought I'd take some pics and document things.

I've been collecting parts over the past couple years and just found a salvage yard this week that had a driveshaft ($105) and transmission ($315) out of a 318ti. One stop shopping for those two big parts is nice! Plus they have a warranty. I also got a brand new Sachs clutch for $135, a 22,000 mile DM flywheel ($23!) plus a brand new 3.45 open diff for $231, all off eBay. I have ordered almost everything that is plastic or rubber, brand new. I have everything ready to go in as soon as the weather warms up. The total parts cost is just shy of $1,110.

I plan on doing this in stages, as to minimize the downtime on the car. The 3.45 manual ratio diff is already installed as an experiment in fuel ecomony when mated to the auto transmission. I'm going to install the pedal cluster, clutch master cylinder, and clutch lines ahead of time.

Today I brought the transmission inside, cleaned it off, drained the fluid and put in brand new Dexron III. I also removed the selector shaft seal and input shaft seal and will install the new ones when they come later this week.

Doing a fluid change on a freshly cleaned Getrag 250.

Yeah, those are my homemade wheel chocks :) They worked pretty well actually to raise the transmission so I could drain it, plus keep it level while I filled it.

Yes, I'm going to post lots of pics! It'll be a little slow here for a while though. I have to wait about a month for it to warm up here in Minnesota. No way am I going to do the major work out in the cold. I probably will install the pedal cluster in the new two weeks though!

I already have some extra parts coming up, so you may be in luck. I'll wait until it's fully done just in case, then I'll post them :)

let me know what you do about the switch thats on the clutch assembly. i havent been able to figure out how to have that connected to have the safety turn on feature. tuned in...

I looked into that, and my car was before they had the clutch-to-start switch (mine's 3/96), so I'm not even going to include that.

But if you want it, it think you just need to connect the two pedal switch wires, to two wires in the park-neutral safety / range switch. You need to find the two wires that connect which allow the automatic car to only start in Park or Neutral.

OK, I just pulled put my Bentley manual and found old notes I have. Looks like you just need to solder together:

Green/Grey (#5) to Brown/Black (#7) to bypass the park/neutral safety switch. Or install the clutch switch wires inline with these two wires, so you complete the circuit to let it start.

Also, for the reverse lights, I'm pretty sure you need to connect the switch on the manual transmission inline with these wires on the park-neutral safety / range switch :

Green/White (#2) to Blue/Yellow (#3)

Driveshaft. The u-joints seem to have no play, and the center bearing seems good. Interesting the guibo that was attached to the transmission looked good. Not a single tiny crack. I was planning on buying a new guibo and center bearing, but the ones I got seem good, so maybe I'll skip that until they are really needed.

thing is i already tried to do that. not sure which wires my uncle and i figure out it was but when i pushed the clutch in it didnt start and when it was let out it did. so you think i had something backwards or something???

ill try out what you said. hopefully it works....

I got around to installing the new seals on the transmission, as well as the new selctor rod joint.

The selector shaft/rod seal.

The input shaft seal.

I bought Hylomar sealant for the outside of the seals (probably not needed).

Applied a bit to the outside of the seals, as well as some ATF to the inside of the seals and selector rod.
