He initially used Castrol DOT4 brake fluid. The following day he cycled the ABS and replaced the brake fluid with ATE Blue at his dealership. He wanted to cycle the ABS to double check everything especially since all the flexible brake lines were replaced. |

So the hub and caliper bracket are the same on the 325/328 and the ti?? I know that when you upgrade to M3 brakes you must also purchase the hub and bracket. This sounds like a great way to get some extra braking force for cheap. |
I believe the caliper bracket is different. It is wider to accomodate the 325/328 rotor. After 4/98 the ti had vented rotors. |

:?: I am picking up a 1998 318ti this week and I know it to be equipped with smooth, non-vented front rotors. I also know that in 4/98 the 318ti came equipped with vented rotors. Mine was manufactured 3/98 so I just missed out. I intend to upgrade the fronts to vented Zimmermann or Brembo rotors but need to know which calipers I will need to replace the current ones with. I see from this forum that some of you have experience along these lines. My question; will I need different caliper mounts to accomodate the larger calipers? I'm assuming that any 1999 318 or 325/328 systems will bolt right up. Can you help with the answer and where I can find the parts? Thanks. |
You will need E36 calipers from a 325/328. Not sure about the brake carrier. They bolt right up. I got mine from Zionsville used. |
Just did this mod on my ti this past weekend. I could not find any E46 calipers/brackets, so went with some low mileage units from an E36 328. I really wanted the extra 0.5-inch rotor size that the E46 330 calipers would have allowed, but just could not find any wrecked E46 330's from which to harvest the brackets. Approximate costs were as follows: Used front 325/328 R/L calipers (2) $150.00 Stock Front 328 Rotors (2) $80.00 Stock Rear 318ti Rotors (2) $70.00 S/S brakelines (6) from TireRack $149.00 Front Brakepads (metalmaster) $47.66 Rear Brakepads (metalmaster) $39.81 Valvoline Synthetic DOT 4 brake fluid - included parts total ~$540.00 Labor 4 hours 280.00 approx $820.00 including shipping Had to bleed the brakes completely twice to get all the air out (bled once, then drove it to get initial seating of pads, then bled again)....probably the same as cycling the ABS that Steve did. Since I got some low mileage calipers, I did not see a need to rebuild them. They did have some ugly salvage yard numbers painted on them, so when everything was installed (and before the wheels were remounted), we wire brushed them, then used some black engine paint and painted the calipers and brackets. The painting only took about an extra 10 minutes, cost next to nothing, and gives it a slightly custom look. I can already feel the difference...can't wait until the pads are completely seated and I can drive them hard! Really glad I did not spend the extra $ on M3 parts. :) |
