Snow Tires/Rims
 

Hi- I am new to the forum and have a question about my 1996 318ti. This is my first winter with it- live in northern NJ. It has all weather tires and I put sand bags in the trunk but it is still not great in the snow. I was thinking of putting snow tires on either the back rims or all 4 rims. Any thoughts on that? If I wanted to get 2 or 4 new rims, are there special rims needed for the 318ti? The current size of my tires is 205/60R15. Appreciate any thoughts that you have. Regards, John

Having lived in Minnesota you want snow tires on all 4 tires. I had Michelin Pilot Alpins and they were great. I know it's economical to do 2 tires in rear But....although your front tires aren't driving they control and steer. I am sure someone will post they've done 2 rear Winter tires and swear by it, and that's fine. But to truly be safe, I would do all 4. Plus...it helps to have them on an extra set of rims. Easy swap from winter to Spring.

Also you don't need special rims per se. Just rims that fit our cars, correct offset will work.

If ‘Jersey allows it, go for studded snows all around. Only a snowcat would do better.

I had an 89 dodge Daytona with studded snows all around (cheap ones from Sears) and it was like a half-track. That was front drive but absolutely get them all around. I got caught in a flurry once in my ti since 1998 and it was not fun.

The weight is a good idea so keep that with the better tires. Don’t forget jumper cables, blanket, flares, energy bars and water too. Just in case you slide off 87 in upstate...
