Ok I will bite since I know a lot about EWS. When you say body side computer what are you talking about?

What EWS system do you have I or II

I am transplating an S52 motor off a 97 M3 into an 96 318ti.
I know they both have EWS. I was told to transfer over the EWS module.
My question is in the details. How much wiring am I transfering? Do I just keep the body wiring and tranfer the EWS module which will plug into the ti harness? When I transfer the engine harness with the S52 motor, will it all plug in to existing connectors on the ti? And how do I deal with the key? Do I replace the ignition switch too? I am sorry about the flood of questions and I did not mean to hijack the thread but I would appreciate any help you can provide.

I am also interested in the e30 question as I may transplant the M44 motor into my E30 318is and supercharge it.

i think i have ews 1.. and i don't really know if there is a body side computer. is the ews in the engine ecu? i guess i could change my question to. "Is there any security systems outside the engine ecu with ews?"

If you are putting it into your e30 a better place to check would be baye30.net or norcale30.com. They will be better able to answer most of your questions. Your best bet is to convert to OBD-1 and bypass the EWS if using an S52. If you are using an S50 you should be able to bypass it as well. Otherwise you need the EWS black box under the dash, the antenna ring that goes around the key, and the chip from the key itself.

I'm not fimilar with wiring on a transplant. You would want the key cylinder to fit the key with the matching chip for the EWS module. Transfer the Key, Module and DME as one complete kit and it will all match. I'm pretty sure they are all the same connectors plugs for the EWS system from car to car. Yours should be a EWS II system on both cars so there should be an antenna on both and they are interchangable so either one will work. Hope this helps

well im using a red 413 ecu.. so it never came with ews. so i should be ok using the 318ti body harness right?

i was thinking about taking the body harness out of the ti and using it on my e30. the lights, instrumental cluster, etc. is everything pretty much plug in? minus the tail light lighting. and front lights? the windows are pretty much the same. im going to put in the ac if no one offers to buy it.

if your dme has no ews, just cut pin 7 (I think) on the main engine harness, Its in bluebimmas's 6cyl conversion thread.
