replacing manual shift knob Hello, I am new to the forum. Last fall I purchased a 1996 318ti, and fell in love with the car immediately. I am replacing the shift knob for two reasons, the leather is tearing off and the knob swivels a good 20 degrees, which is worsening the leather wear. I purchased a replacement shift knob, in the original leather style, from Bavauto. It came only with the plastic shift-pic and no parts. Also, there were no instructions. For the life of me I cant find a decent guide with pics and required parts for replacing the shift knob. Thanks! |
Is it a factory part? Then it just press it on. |
Yes, I believe it is the factory part. |
Then it just slides onto the shift lever. You may need to pound it on there. |
Book to look into... I bought this book through Amazon: 101 Performance Projects For Your BMW 3 Series 1982-2000. I am loving it. they describe shift knob replacement on pg 201. You can also see what they put on the web at: www.101projects.com/bmw/68.htm |

That book is very helpful. |
Pull straight up on the shift knob, take new shift knob, push straight down. Installed. All of the articles in that book can be found on pelicanparts.com. |
