Shock came off mount
 

Omg, I was driving home from my friends house and i hear this clanking sort of noise.

It took me till the next day before I was about to go home that i noticed the driver side shock was hanging down at the back!!!!

Closer inspection it appears it just slipped off the bottom mount point, I don't really know what to look for but it appears nothing actually broke....

I will be honest that i did not really notice the change in drive, except for some minor shuddering.

The most i noticed was the noise of the shock hitting the mount when i went over a bump!!

I drove maybe 70 kilometres like this!!

The car is getting fixed today as the shop put the shocks on, they are bilstein, I do not know what type.

Do you expect I would have done any other damage driving like this???

Also, how would a shock come off the lower mount like that???

The rear is a separate spring a chock assembly, so it sounds like you went over a bumo and it fell out. Even with the shock out the car is still on the spring so there is really nothing to worry about other then the "TI" riding like a Cadilac. The RSM (Rear Shock Mount) is also separate from the shock. In your strunk on the rear strut tower you should see three nuts two little ones and one big one. The big one holds the RSM to the shock and the two little ones hold the RSM to the car.

Probably the big one got loose and came off or your RSM broke.

I am not so worried now, yeah I noticed it was sitting on the spring, it doesn't even hang that low and is actually fairly stiff.

I just hope there is no damage to the shock itself, but I do remember reading somewhere that bilsteins have a lifetime warranty??

Ok the shop has called me....

all fixed free of charge, and they extended the warranty for another 12 months.

Let me guess: This was the shop that did the shoddy shock installation in the first place? Hope they checked the other more important stuff they may have left loose!

Yes, they said that they had missed something when they installed them. They checked the other one and indeed it was showing signs of coming off!!

I really can't justify this mistake by them, but they have provided top service for me since i got my car.

It could have been worse though, maybe i should look for a new mechanic!?

Well, this is about as shoddy as it gets. It's just a bolt and it only needs to be tightened. If this is indicative of the care they take with your car I'd never let them mount a wheel or touch the brakes!

I suppose I'd want to know who it was that worked on the car and have the shop swear they'd never let him work on your car again. Next time it could be your wheel that falls off in traffic, or a ball joint that comes loose so that you lose your steering.

I don't know if I can overlook this mistake by them, even though they have looked after my car very well in the past.

I will make sure I find out who made the mistake, as it really could have been worse!
