another engine leak

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12.../90961g05L.jpg

Hey can you guys help me out!
I got another engine leak.. im so broke I dont want to go to the shop and
not be sure of what the problem is..
looks like the part circled in red is leaking could it be a gasket or oring or part? it looks like its leaking and its dripping on the bottom crankshaft, the bottom crankshaft looked like it was leaking but after i cleaned around and checked it seems like it coming from the top one it doesnt leak alot of oil but it leaks ...and im wondering if that would turn on my check engine light because ive had the leak for a couple of weeks now but the light just turned on.. should i fix it soon? :frown:
thanks for the help.

ps. its not a oilfilterhousingleak

Well, the part circled is the water pump. No oil there. However the timing cover gaskets that are near it could be dumping oil.

Lol! For some reason I love your illustration. Like truckster said, your water pump shouldn't be leaking oil. It is possible for oil to get splashed around from wind or hitting the belts and pulleys though. If you go with the whole "gravity" theory, I suppose it may be coming from your valve cover(any oil on the front of the cylinder head?), timing cover gasket(just under the head), or even the front crank seal(possibly spitting on the crank pulley and getting slung up towards the water pump). If you're sure it's coming from the water pump area, it's possible that someone replaced the water pump and cracked the timing cover in the process. This is why I always tell people not to strike or pry on the water pump when removing it. Best of luck man, hope you get it sorted out.

Timing chain cover leak. Right where the top and bottom timing chain cover meet together there is a gasket and has a split right there and is filled with sealant during assembly. Mine drove me nutz until I figured it out...

Just a guess

I looked around really good and I think its the upper and lower timing chain cover gasket and the front cranckseal.. going to change all that. what else should I change? should I change the water pump and gaskets around there? http://www.esatclear.ie/~bpurcell/ti...top640x480.jpg looks like im going to have to rebuild all that dont I? in order to fix all does gaskets and o-rings and stuff do i also have to remove the rear timing cover and do all does gaskets too? grr

I think you have to do the water pump gasket to get the cover off. I did not do my bottom timing chain cover when I did mine. The end of the gasket between the two chain covers is what was leaking on mine and it needs a dap of sealant on each end to ensure it doesn't leak again. On mine I believe the the bottom cover gasket is made out of steel...

May the force be with you, John S

Mine LOOKED like it was the gaskets your talking about.
It was the oil filter tower that was leaking, the fan and maybe the alternator was blowing the oil around...
I would definitely do the tower gasket and the 2 o-rings first, its too cheap and easy to do!

+1. Mine looked exactly like that and it was a mess all over the front and under the car. Sprayed diluted purple power and power washed in a nearby car wash, drove it home slow, and found the oil coming from the oil filter housing.
Took me one Saturday to get the $15 parts from the dealer and finish the job. Now it's clean and dry like a new engine.

It is really best to replace the gasket

You might be able to stop the leak with a O-ring if the oil is only coming out of the bolt hole area. Also when you put in the bolt make sure it does not dead-head before tightening, you have clean oil free from threads inside and on bolt. You can blue loctite or use sealant on the threads to help with sealing the threads. O-rings were not used at all but you could put one on the shaft of the bolt and a tight fit in the case if the bolt has a shank. If no shank then you can't use a o-ring. I'm not even sure if it would work and I would not like to do this to my car or a car I was selling to someone.
