CALIFORNIA SUNROOF - MOTOR - BROKEN!!! I love my car and i just got it a nice little tuneup - new sparkplugs - the works. Both windows are still jacked up but work...for now. I was wondering if anyone else's california sunroof is BROKEN. The motor just gave out one day. I took it back to the dealer and they charged me $400 JUST TO CLOSE IT. UGH. I asked them for a quote and they said that they would probably have to replace the entire unit including the motor. I asked them how much and they said it would take a lot of time and labor. The quote.. $3,000! Has anyone else had their california sunroof repaired? Does anyone have any other advice for me? I have had so much repair work done to this car -- the catalytic convereter has been replaced, the transmission rebuilt, both windows are broken, the SRS light is messed up, the engine mounts replaced... ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY appreciated. I want to keep this car for a very very very very long time but the costs are KILLING me. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same with the roof!!! Thanks! |
try searching this has been covered many times! |
re: sunroof thanks for the reponse! yeah i tried searching and didn't find anything really straight to the point. i guess i am looking for the motor and have searched the internet far and wide and have no luck :( |
try realoem.com and then pelicanparts.com |
if the motor is busted , then you can just get another :) the motor is easy enough to change, as it sits on the frame assembly its not directly connected to anything. im not sure what motor u need (2 models before or after mid 95, with or without auto open function. Removal is covered in these docs. http://www.318ti.org/forum/downloads.php?do=file&id=3 |
re: motor thanks again. yeah bmw tried to charge me $3,000! i'm like, no way! the car is a 318ti with the m-sport package. kelly blue book lists it as maybe $6,000 - there is no way i could justify putting in $3,000 just for the roof! |
yeah dealership is not commonly called dealership for nothing |
also try Bavarian Recyclers in CA. Look on ebay for 318ti parts cars and you'll see a slew of them pop up for Bav Recyclers. They're probably the biggest BMW dismantlers around. There are other yards around but i cannot remember the names just now and they're mostly in the midwest. |

what what what! thats lame now isnt it! i just realized everything i have said $tealership on this site it has been editing! but i think the new spelling works well |
c'mon Steven, don't be that guy  what's wrong with $tealership? |
i actually like the dealership now that i have my bmwcca membership! saves me a lot of time and hassle and yes time is money sometimes! |
I'm surprised by how people instantly dismiss dealerships when they could join the BMWCCA for what $35? and get 20% off if they look around. I'm lucky, my local dealer gives that 20% and the parts guys are really helpful. I always get the feeling they're the unsung heroes or "grunts" of the dealership and like guys who do their own work. |
my dad's good friends with some of the people who work at the BMW dealership in northern vermont, so we get discounts anyways  |
$3k for a cali roof repair!!!!!????? Holy ****, Im never touching mine again to make sure it wont break! |
