Thermostat housing

Hello just joined and im glad to be part of this.
I already have a question. I have a 95 318ti i replaced the tstat. Problem is that the aluminum housing cracked. Im wondering if i installed the seal correctly. So my question is. Does the seal go between the tstat amd housing gasket? Thanks in advance

I did not maybe a combination of age and incorrect torque. Do you know the specs
