Which is faster? stock e36 M3 or DASC 318ti?

In a straight line, which would be faster? The stock e36 m3 or DASC 318ti? My brother says that his m3 would definitely beat a DASC 318ti from 0-60. Which would win on the track assuming suspension/wheel/brake upgrades on the 318ti? Has anyone ever compared the 2 cars? I'm just curious.

Seems like it would be close:

The DASC 318ti should be 2745lbs and have 210 hp or so.
The stock E36 M3 is 3175lbs and has 240 hp.

13.07 lbs per hp for the DASC 318ti
13.22 lbs per hp for the M3

So just by that, the 318ti should be a hair faster, but there are a million other things to consider... gear ratios for example; also I didn't add the weight of the SC itself... I have no idea how much it weighs.. if you take that into account you have to consider how much gas you have in your tank when the race is done and the body weight of the driver.

I'm sure this race has been done repeatedly by some of the members...

just a quick question, how exactly how much gas you have in your tank matters? Does it really matter if you race with a full tank and if you race with half a tank, and even 1/4 of a tank?

I would say that how much gas in your tank does in fact matter somewhat. If a gallon of gas weighs 6lbs for example (sounds right, but not 100% sure), and your tank holds 14 gallons, then the weight of fuel alone would be 84 lbs. Now if you were only carrying around 5 gallons, you have just saved yourself more than 50 lbs. right there. Would you race with a 50lb bag of cement in your backseat? Probably not, but if you race with a full tank you are in essence doing that. Every little bit CAN make a difference, thats not to say that it necessarily will, but it could.

Makes sence. So it would be better to run at 1/4 of gas.

The amount of fuel in the car can make a huge difference... The lighter the car and the less torque, the more difference it makes..

This is no where more obvious than in F1 racing. Watch those cars when they are right off the starting line and depending on their fuel strategy you can definitely see a difference in the speed of the cars. They can save anywhere from a few tenths to a few complete seconds off their lap times when running on low fuel. 2 seconds is a long time in F1.

Looking at some of the numbers on dtmpower there are stock m3's with anywhere from 205-220 horsepower at the rear wheels.. I think most of them at at or below 210. The DASC is under 190. Add in a lack of LSD on most of our cars and the M3 is winning. I'm sure a properly done suspension, lsd, frame bracing, brakes, clutch, exhaust, etc... and the Ti may run with the M3 if it doesn't edge it out slightly. Dusten with 9psi or the S3 DASC on understeer.com could probably hang with an m3.

You would run less gas if you are drag racing. On a track you want to make sure you tank doesn't get to empty or you can starve the engine in corners.

this is what i notice a lot. Lets say i have 3/4 of fuel. It will slowly climb to 1/2. Then the 1/2 will also slowly climb to 1/4. But from 1/4 to the end it eats it fast? Why is this? I usually put gas again on my car when my OBC indicates i have 20miles left. I know its not correct but thats what i go buy. Ive gone as low as 15. I dont know if this is bad? But why is it that the last quarter of gas, the engine is sucking it down quicker. Sorry to hijack the thread, but i dont want to start a whole new thread just for this question.

i know is not the same case but i race with my friend and i win by a lot, he have a 1995 323i manual with only cold air intake , i have a 1997 318ti with a MA supercharger and a tranny swap , i run 10psi of boost, so 0-30 he are close to me but over 30mph i.m in front for about 2.5 car the more and more and more, finally at 90mph i only view 2 small ligths on my rear view mirror.. well that is my history

i think the correct answer is bettwen a Forced induction TI and swaped TI

HuGo 08-16-2006 03:54 AM

when did you do a tranny swap? So the MA kit worked out for you? How are you pushing 10psi when there stage 1 kit didnt advertise that.

FATHER 08-16-2006 03:58 AM

I change the pulley, use a SuperFMU and larger injectors. The tranny is from 325 with 3.73 diff from e30, i use that diff because i use big wheels like 19 or 20",

It's the shape of the gas tank. Because it's not a rectangular box, the volume is different from 1/4 down than from 1/2-1/4.
