318ti DME

All,
I am installing the DASC system on my 1998 318ti M44 Motor but would like to keep the original DME and have another DME reprogrammed by Nick G so that if I ever have to revert back to stock, I can install the original DME.

Questions:
1) Is the DME specific to the Car or the Motor?
2) Is the DME interchangeable with other same make and models?
3) Where is the DME located in the vehicle for removal for reprogramming?

Any feedback or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Peter

DME is specific to the M44 motor.

DME and cluster are matched. You'll get a mileage error light in the cluster if the mileage isn't synced, but they are interchangeable. If you switch DME it's common to use the associated cluster.

They are in a pocket in the firewall. Passenger side. Behind airbox in TI.

What you're thinking of doing might get messy with the mileage (re-sale value), probably be better to go one way or the other with the original.

I had a spare dme flashed with a tune from midnight so that I could do the same thing.

As far as I'm aware, the M44 cars had two different DME revisions. If you look at the part numbers you should see a 667 or 668 as the last three digits. You need to make sure the spare dme you buy is the same as what is currently in your car. I would ask for a EWS delete with your tune so that you won't have to deal with key chips or ews control boxes.
