1996 318ti Over Heating HELP!!
 

Ok I'm at a loss here. I've been searching the threads and cant find the answer to my problem yet and I'm hoping someone out here can be quicker than me. My 318ti has no heat.. put in a brand new t-stat, waterpump,upper and lower radiator hoses and fluid.. but she's still sick and overheating. I have NO Heat, Airs blowing but no HOT air, Just COLD.. whats next?? I Have No Water In Oil so I'm thinking it's not the Head Gasket... could it be Heater Coil?... I'm pretty Mechanicaly Apt and just reacently did a head gasket on a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am.. and I'm Not "Tool Poor" so I should have everything I need to fix this problem... could someone please point me in the right direction.. I Love this car and miss driving it. Thank You.

heater core, or the radiator itself most likely.

Did you flush the coolant system before putting all of the new components in? It would also help if we knew why you replaced all of the cooling system.

If the old radiator blew the top hose connector off, you could have all kinds of plastic bits in the cooling system that need to be flushed. Other than that, if everything is hooked up properly, make sure you bled the system. It can be a real pain bleeding the system after replacing evrerything.

sounds to me like you have air in the system. There is a bleeder screw on the top of the radiator, next to the cap. I removed that screw, and filled with 50/50 mix with distilled agua...fill until all the bubbles come out of that air hole. (be careful when tightening it back up)....
Be patient, maybe park on an incline....

yup, I have to burp my system every couple months. it's a PITA but I fear I have a leak in a $$$ spot.

try this... it's cheap & easy:

1) park on an incline, nose uphill.
2) turn your car on.
3) crank your defrost all the way up (not sure why, but i read it somewhere & i just do it).
4) unscrew radiator cap & the little bleeder screw (take it out).
5) fill radiator overflow, let it circulate through. you'll see bubbles come out the bleeder. it will spill out, but it's no big deal.
6) repeat #5 until you don't see any more bubbles.
7) rinse off your driveway. :)

Are you losing coolant?? If so, you may have a leak. I had to recently replace my radiator because it was leaking. You could be leaking from one of the two connector pieces that are notorious for going bad. As for your heat. You may have a problem with your heater core or your heater valve. Also there is a common problem with the temperature control cable behind the dashboard. Sometimes this cable will come loose and then snap out of it's hole. This will cause your box to stay open and cold air only will blow in. You have to take out the glove box and get back there to reattach the cable to the box so it can open and close the hatch properly. You need to check for coolant lose, then leaks, and try to fix your overheating problem first and see if that fixes your heat too, if not then get behind the glove box and see if that cable is still good.

:wink:Thank You All... I Fixed it.. I didnt "burp" the Beamer correctly and that was giving me airlock.. but after asking some q?'s and researching this site I fingered it out and got it fixed this morning... again thank you all for your help!!!:biggrin:
