Water Pump Life I'm curious, how long has your original water pump lasted? Please post mileage. My car is on it's original water pump, just about to hit 100,000 miles any day now. |
Don't know how different my pump is, but it has +240,000 miles on it. |
my car has 128k on it right now, AFAIK it's the original pump |
154,000 still has the original. |
I bought my car with 161k on it and the thermo wasn't opening up. It was replaced immediately after I picked it up |
{bump} Worth bumping with so many people claiming high failure rates. |
I don't think it's so much the pump itself failing as it is the bearing failing. A while back, there was a big concern about the plastic impellar failing so it was replaced with a metal impellar, but honestly, I've never seen or heard of a plastic impellar breaking. I mean, I've heard people talk about it, but I've never seen an actual account of it happening. A while back my engine developed a chirp. I located it to be coming from the alternator belt tensioner. I noticed that I can replicate the chirp by compressing the tensioner by hand via pressing down on the belt itself. I could be wrong, but I think BMW designed the tensioner to chirp as a warning signal that something is problematic within the belt drive system. Long story short, it turned out I had a faulty water pump bearing. Replaced the water pump, chirp went away. |
I think the ti always had a metal impeller. I have 234K on my pump. |

I think mine died around 140k. Bearing failure. |

Besides, I don't want anyone to hit me. :) |
have you been driving it in reverse? |

I don't really see why you wouldn't replace the pump regularly- at least every 100k or so. The bearings to wear out, and a failure can be catastrophic. Pumps are cheaper than head gaskets, and much easier to change. |

I know the S50 also left the factory with a plastic impeller. Having seen it in both it and the M44, I've been under the impression that the plastic pump was common across E36s, at least for a few years. |

When I pulled out my original pump last month, it had a silver metal impeller. The one I bought from Circle BMW was black, hard to tell if it was plastic or metal. I asked my GF what she thought, and she said it was metal, but really hard to tell. Quote:
