Engine rebuild.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Looking to get a rebuild kit for an m44 1.9L motor. 1996 318ti.

Umm... I don't think such a thing exists, and you're definitely not the first to ask. You can buy pistons (Maxsil?), they're insanely expensive. Not to dissuade you, but you're going to find the parts to do an engine rebuild very expensive. Take a look at the Metric Mechanic website, http://metricmechanic.com/, that'll give you a starting point.

Much appreciated. Just doing research on preventive maintenance. Figured maybe it would be more worthwhile to rebuild what I have when the time comes. Rather than swap to a 6cyl. Not sure if all that money and work would be worth the gains I'd receive. Still doing overall research though. Thanks again for the input

Even going to a 2.8 engine the gains are totally worth it. And those engines are quite cheap these days (M52 B28).

Even the M3 engine can be had for under three grand all day long. I paid twice that for mine back in the day.

Like I said. I'm definitely still considering it

I've got 232,000 miles and recently had a 35.5 mpg tank of gas that was roughly 80% highway. The only engine work that's occurred is a new head gasket, which was only necessary because I pulled the head to chase an oil leak associated with the profile gasket. I lapped the valves and replaced the valve stem seals while the head was off, but I doubt that had much effect on performance. All four cylinders still displayed the original honing.

Roughly, budget for 2k in both rebuild parts and 'while you're in there' parts.

I carry everything needed to do an OEM rebuild. If I can help, let me know.
