P1174, what is the best way to approach?

Replaced the valve cover gasket due to oil in spark plug holes causing misfire DTC. Then idled like crap but got that fixed due to improperly seated gasket in the rear of valve cover. CEL turned off but came back with P1174 code. I searched and found lots of fixes but not sure where to start logically.

What is the most logical way to approach this fault without breaking the bank? Car is being driven now by daughter in Atlanta (3 hours away from me). Does not seem to suffer from power loss, and drives fine and pulls hard and idles smooth.
Does she have to worry about getting stranded?
Thanks.

If you have a scanner that does real time monitoring, look at the O2 sensors, fuel trims, MAF flow. The 02's should move around a lot, the fuel trim should be under +-10%. And the maf should vary with engine speed.

Check for vacuum leaks. Mine ran pretty good, except for the codes, ended up being the MAF- but it depends on which way the fuel trims are.

Thank you man!

She just goes to Autozone to get the codes pulled. No realtime scanner. I guess it's going to be tough. I still have the blown engine with me so maybe I can start swapping parts like, MAF, injectors. Since the car already has maybe around 230k miles on the O2 and 100k miles on the second engine, that should justify a new one. I will start with that and start swapping parts and check if the code goes away. Thanks.

Yeah, 230K is good justification....Though I replaced a 274K one on my mazda that was fine.

Start with swapping the MAF.

Bought her a used Actron CP9135 code reader. Read and erased DTC 1174 yesterday and CEL has not come back yet. It looks like the big vacuum leak from the valve cover gasket replacement triggered it. Since the valve cover gasket has been reseated and car idled fine and steady I just erased the fault and CEL has not come back on since. I believe it is fixed.

from what im learning p1174 can be triggered by bad CCV or PCV. replacing CCV on my 97 ti now.

Yea I had that same code a few months back...it was the ccv valve.

Sorry to revive an old topic but I thinks it`s better than start a new one for the same thing.

I have the P1174 error code, what is the CCV valve?

Yes, i solved it with a cheap valve from China. I've payed about 30$ on it.
It's the IVC, you can buy a used one too. The part number is 13411435846.
Some say that you can use the hyunday tiburon, sonata, thats the same, i don't confirme it, but i can give it a try.
