M trim color, Paint question
 

this is my first official post so hopefully this is in the correct place, im a new member ( joined today, about 20 minutes ago) and my question is this, i have a 98 318ti sport, and my M body mouldings around the car are grey ( the car is black)

in the past ive used dupont trim coat on my cars which has turned out fantastic, but with this car im worried about using it and ending up with 2 shades of contrasting black, is it even possible to get my hands on a can of paint that is the same bmw black ( i dont know what the actual name of it is) so i can do all my trim on the car in the same black? i think it would look much nicer than a collection of 5 different shades

Welcome to the site! As on most vehicles, the mouldings are not painted. They're just injected molded plastic, which makes them prone to oxidation and sun bleaching. From my observations, painted moldings look good until the first time someone hits it with their door or a shopping cart runs into it. Then you have to deal with scuffs and/or chipped paint. I actually have a can of the Dupont trim paint that I had planned on using, but I found a bunch of videos on youtube that show people restoring their moldings with a heat gun.

Wow, I never thought about using heat in order to restore our trim...I plan on giving it a try. Thanks Jesse!

Welcome to the site! While everyone might already know this, dont use the heat gun without either removing the trim or blocking the paint of the car with cardboard.

Just wanted to add that before someone stripped off all the paint around the trim.

I am not sure what color matches the black that perfectly unless you went to a paint shop.

People use heat guns all the time to roll their fenders. Don't focus in one spot, just keep the heat moving. If you remove the moldings from the car, you run the risk of the plastic bending/curling from the heat.
