DASC from 318ti into Z3 - need elbow

I have a donor 1.9 M44 318ti parts car with a complete DASC installed.
I bought a nice 1.9 M44 Z3 and plan to transplant the DASC onto the Z3.
The original DASC kits from Downing Atlanta were different for a 318ti vs Z3. I'm looking for the different parts needed for a Z3 installation (i.e. aluminum elbow, brackets, etc.)

Does anyone know what specific parts I need? Has anyone taken the DASC from a Z3 and placed the supercharger onto your 318ti? If so, I'd like to buy the parts that are Z3 specific. Any help, info, or sources is appreciated!

Thanks all.

P.S. I drive a '95 318ti with DASC. Rather than own another ti with DASC I wanted to try something different with the donor supercharger. With a Z3, I can relive my Triumph TR6 days.

Ok I will try to give you some information and I'm not 100% sure on what I'm telling you. Only way to get 100% true information is call Downing and speak to Jim Goodrow.

I don't believe there are different elbows for different cars. I'm talking about the TB to SC elbow. The reason I say this is tooling for the castings would be too expensive to have a different elbow for different model cars.

Downing never made a DASC kit for the M42 but many people have installed them on the M42 with minor mods.

The only area you might have an issue with elbows is from the throttle body to the air filter since you have the MAF, traction control TB and ambient air temp located in the filter box.

You might need to move some items like the SAP or PS pump but everything should fit with minor mods.

I say go for it and make the mods as needed while y7ou install

Did you end up installing the kit?

I bought the correct machined "elbow" from Downing Atlanta and a couple brackets. Lucky for me, they have a few odds and ends leftover from the kits they used to produce. The items weren't cheap, but should make for a clean installation on the Z3 rather than using a 2X4 as a makeshift bracket. I'm taking this DASC swap project slowly. I still need a few odds and ends. This project went on hold for a while (as I juggle work and home projects). You have inspired me to work in this project again. Thanks. P.S. If there are any Z3 fans, I found a clean 1.9 M44 for the DASC that had been converted to "widebody/6-cylinder" rear fenders, "M" seats/mirrors/center multi-gauge console, plus I located a factory hard top. My ti is essentially done, but I always have the urge to "build" or tinker with older BMWs. Know the feeling?

I absolutely know the feeling.. as im typing im actually heading to Atlanta.. I'm doing the same . I bought a DASC from a 318ti. Jim Goodreau will be machining a new elbow for the z . I'm still missing pullies and the pulley bracket.. hoping he still has some other parts while I'm there!! Best of luck with the project and I will keep posted on mine !!

I accidentally "over-bought." The Z3 install guide Jim sent me (to determine what parts I'm lacking and should order) indicated I needed the bracket to re-locate the Secondary Air Pump, so I ordered it. It arrived with the rest of the goodies. Later, I come to learn that my Z3 didn't come equipped with the SAP so I bought a bracket that won't be needed. My fault for not checking first if I actually had the SAP on my Z3, but the "1997+ Z3" install guide mislead me. I plan to someday ask Jim if he'd accept it back for a refund. (I've been too busy lately.) I'm so grateful Jim is around, available, and eager to help. Will be a sad day when he's not. I'd like to hear of your progress and any notes or tips I should be aware of. You'll likely finish before I do. Best of luck. We'll both have Z3's with decent HP - but lite weight over the 6-cyl Z3s. Think power to weight ratio. Good times. Fun little project, something unique - like the ti.

I'm pretty sure I have a SAP. What do you want for the bracket?

GotSWoo 06-12-2017 07:52 PM

Ideally, I'd like to get my money back out of it (the SAP bracket not needed). Here's what I paid around Aug of 2015 for a couple items:

B2-0002 Elbow, Short $295.00
B2-0020 Bracket, SAP 75.00
(Shipping was additional)

How about $60 for the SAP bracket including shipping to NJ?

Sounds like a deal.. I'll talk with Jim and see for sure if it's necessary.. but more than likely.. more to follow!

Hi Guys, I'm in the same boat as you guys. I bought the 318 kit for my 97 Z3 and then realized they have a different elbow. I bought the kit in April of this year (from this site) and followed up with Downing Atlanta for the elbow (back in April). I spoke to Jim and he said they still have the cast and would be able to create another elbow for my Z3. We sent a few emails back and forth over the last few months and I spoke with him just last week to confirm he has the elbow. He said he did. I emailed him today to set up the purchase and he asks me if I'm still coming to Atlanta. When I tell him that he's thinking of someone else, he tells me the most dreadful news...the last elbow is being picked up this week and they will no longer sell any! I can't believe it. He did send a follow up email telling me that they may have a "damaged" elbow that can be re-machined and repaired. I guess that will be my only hope, otherwise, I'll be selling the 318 kit and wait around for a Z3 kit. I just can't believe my 1 month of complacency led to this mess. Lesson learned. Good luck to you guys! Hope it all goes well!

I'm stopping by there tomorrow or thursday.. I'll ask him for you

Thanks. I hope he has good news.

Sorry to hear. I hope you eventually find your parts.
Somewhere, there's likely a person who swapped their DASC from a Z3 to a ti and have the essential Z3 only parts collecting dust. That's why I started this thread. Nothing panned out so I paid a premium from Downing Atlanta (but glad to get it).
