awd ti conversion

alright, i would like to do something amazing to a ti. i love them but i want to build one worthy of being noticed. as if tis arent unique enough, imagine one with an awd conversion? it would just be insane. im thinking between the e30 325ix and the e46 325xi the parts could be obtainable. im not the type of person that just wants a car that is good in a drag race, i actually like the driving. we all know tis drive amazingly. and so do awds. so put the 2 together and it would be crazy. another thing is, ide like to do this with an rb26. now dont you all start bashing me for this because i wouldnt just stick any engine in a ti but the rb26 is one of the best in the world(it can hold 1000++ hp). for those of you who dont kno what this is, its the engine in the nissan skylines. i think a ti with awd conversion and an rb26 would be a car that H.I.N. would actually pay you to show off. the hardest part to this would be the custom front axles and rear driveshaft. i dont wanna try this with the e30 325ix engine becuase ive heard it was crap and not intended for "fun" driving but rather just driving in snow. the rb26 is an awd made to not shatter diffs when you play around with it.please let me know what you guys think it would take to pull this off and what setup wld be the best to use. i heard that some one did a e36 m3 awd with the driveline from a mitsu.vr4. i didnt post this to hear people say its dumb or gonna slow the car down or anything like that.

maybe a use eagle talon tsi for the parts. You could find those pretty cheap.. hmm you got me thinking!

thesk8nmidget 03-05-2008 03:15 PM

that would be an amazing setup and will take a lot of dedication and effort!

please keep us posted and if you go for it make a htread and take pictures along the way

It will take a buttload of money, time, and frustration. Probably many cases of beer when it's all said and done.

That being said, I think it'll be worth it.

maybe find a wrecked 325ix (e30)? this would be too cool

im thinking it would be cheaper than you may think. i would have to use a 95 because of ews and since traction control would have to be disabled i dont really care what year it is. i 95 ti without an engine or transmission is less than $1000. ive been watching craigslist and ive seen one go for $300 and one for $600. the rb26 complete engine is $3,500. i heard the e30 325ix has a more narrow track(idk what that means. wheels closer together? help!) and on the e46 325xi (and all the other e46s i supose) the wheels are farther apart. i may just look into the r33 or r34 front half of the awd system and find out if the distance between the wheels is anywhere near the same (btw ive been talking about the distance between left and right wheels not front and back). fabricating motor and tranny mounts is doable but i dont want to try and custom make front axles because of the fact that they must be really durable and precise. maybe i will get lucky and find some that almost fit. usually front axles have an end that is vertically groved or w/e and the other end has a metal plate that bolts up. in that case i could cut the plate down to be really small and get the one i need and weld them together (not sure if it would be bmw axle w/ nissan plate vice versa). also the rear drive shaft would have to be modified but that can be done in the same way i just explained on the front for the plate that mounts to the rear diff. im thinking for $5000-$6000 i could have it working although ide want to upgrade shocks/brakes and get a rear lsd diff with the same ratio as the one already on the rb26 engine. great thing about being able to push 1000+ hp on an awd is that you get the quick take off and have the power to not get blown away in the end. if i go through with it a will most definutly take pics and start a thread about it.

that would be pretty cool, but I think it would take way more money than it's worth IMO

thesk8nmidget 03-05-2008 04:44 PM

well for the driveline you can get a local shop to make one for probably under 100 if you give them each flange and then tell them what you want the length to be.

My projects always tend to go over budget.

i think all car projects tend to go over budget... thats why i dont make a budget... i make a minimum amount of money i will most likely have into it and then expect a bunch more on top of that.

hahah, awesome.

good luck dude.

318tian 03-05-2008 11:36 PM

lol, yeah i just had to add that in there at the end. i know it will slow the car down, its common sense. but it will perform amazingly and the rb26 will make up for it. i didnt want this to turn into a thread for people to just put me down for my ideas because im not just an idiot that wants to put fiberglass crap all over it(body kit) and rice it out (im sure yall know what that means). thats something i like about these cars, the are sort of classy. not just a peice of crap civic or something. when i had my last one (98,5spd,leather,obc,blk on beige) these guys at school in a f150 king ranch truck and a tiburon (both $10,000++) callin me the rich boy and i paid $5100 for my car which is like less than half of their vehicles. i even had a guy freaking out on me when i gave him a ride home one day and yelling out the window sayin "im in a BMW" and crap like that.

btw thesk8nmidget are you talking about the front axles? under $100 if a bring them the nissan and bmw flanges needed and lengths? i didnt think the axle problem would be that easy to solve..

thesk8nmidget 03-05-2008 11:48 PM

my bad i must have misread i thought you said driveline... the axles will be a little more difficult. but i bet you can ask a driveline place if they can possibly take each flange and fab something up to make it work.

classicronnie 03-05-2008 11:52 PM

lol i live in a hicktown i have one of the nicest cars at school the only ones nicer are like an altima, 350z and new camry, everyones got lifted trucks

318tian 03-06-2008 12:14 AM

lol, i live in louisiana. EVERYONE at school has a lifted truck. there like rims and black people (no offense anyone :) ) , they will lift any piece of crap truck as high as possible. there one that stands out and is waayyy bigger. i think a could parralell park under it (i could pull right in under it if it wasnt for the axles). but a good friend of mine has an 07 350z with the newer engine that is dual intake/throddle body. it OK, but not a BMW, lol.

i prolly did type driveline, i meant drivetrain. anyone know anything about how to wire up the ecu?? im thinking imma need to buy all new custom cluster. but what all do i need to hook the engine up to? i know i gotta make the starter work and make the a/c compressor and p/s pump hook into the BMW a/c and steering somehow. and get some radiator hoses that will work i guess. these type of questions are why i started this thread. i need some inout from people who have swapped engines and know what all the hook into and such.
