318Ti to 328Ti

Base Specifications
Year: 1997
Make: BMW
Model: 318TI [Active Package]
Color: Moreagrun-Metallic
Engine: M44B19
Drive Type: RWD
Transmission: Five-Speed Manual w/3.45 Open Diff
Wheelbase: 106.3 In.
Overall Length: 165.7 In.
Overall Height: 54.8 In.
Overall Width: 66.9 In.
Curb Weight: 2,745 Lbs

Attachment 4093

Engine:
The M44 has been removed after bending some valves. Cost of labor and parts to rebuild he head and make sure it isn’t cracked just isn’t worth the time and money. Instead of dropping in another M44, with future plans of supercharging, the M44B19 will be replaced with the M52B28 from the E36 (96-00) 328i/is/ic.

Exhaust:
I currently have the stock piping into a SuperSprint catback exhaust. It will be sold or trashed and a custom exhaust fitted. Mounted to the head will be the S52 headers, midpipes, resonators into a custom dual inlet dual out let muffler. It wont be like the normal side by side dual tip muffler, it will similar to the exhaust on the Nissan 350Z.

Intake:
I have a custom intake for the M44 and will create an intake for the M52. I will also be running the M50 manifold later on down the road unless I decide to run it from the start.

Cooling System:
Stock system wont work with the M52B28, so a brand new 6-cyl setup will be installed. All coolant lines will be replaced before the engine is installed. I will also perform the FDM on installation of the new cooling system.

Transmission:
Currently stock. Not sure what clutch setup I will run, but toying with the idea of a lightweight flywheel with OE 328 or M5 clutch kit. Looking into the UUC short shift kit.

Differential:
Current setup is the OE Open 3.45 differential and axles. I will be purchasing an E24 M6 3.46 Limited-Slip differential, MCoupe finned rear diff plate, and E30 axles. I estimate that the top speed will be around the 130 area, no need to go faster than that anyways, and the car will have quick acceleration off the line with plenty getup at highway speeds

Suspension:
Current setup includes FK Automotive Springs with the OE shocks/struts. I will most likely upgrade to the Bilstein PSS coil over kit, added x-brace, MCoupe rear sway, and unknown upgraded front sway bar.

Brakes:
Current setup includes the OE brake caliper, Zimmerman solid, cross-drilled rotors, and EBC racing brake pads. I will be upgrading to the 328 front calipers to switch over to vented blank rotors, unknown brand ceramic brake pads, and Stainless Steel brake lines.

Wheels:
Current setup, Miglia Evo5 rims 16x7.5 with generic 205/60/16 tires. Not sure what rims ill be buying but I may get some ASA Ar2’s, Gunmetal CSLs, M-Parallels, or some type of 5-spoked rim with unknown brand of tires.

Exterior Body:
Stock skirts, rear bumper, and M3 front bumper. I will be purchasing M3 twisty side skirts, rear Mtech bumper, VIS carbon fiber hood (paint-matched), refurbish the front bumper, e30 side mirrors, and e46 roof spoiler.

Lighting:
Currently running modified DEPO headlights with Prolumen 6000k Xenon kits. ZKW fog lights also with 6000k Xenon kits. Amber corner lights, side lights, and amber/white/ red tail lights. I will be purchasing brand new DEPO headlights with 4300k Xenon bulbs, ZKW fogs with 6000k Xenon bulbs, smoked corners, sides, and smoked red/white tail lights.

Interior:
Stock black leather interior with gray headliner and pillars. I will be purchasing recaro knock-off, black leather racing seats, reupholstered black headliner and pillars, 3-spoke steering wheel, M3 cluster with silver rings, and BSW audio upgrade later down the road.

Looks like a fun project. Good luck getting it done. All of us Great lakes region tis will have to meet up some time!

Definately. Im not sure if i want to stray away from home right after the swap. I wanna break it in first and get used to it, not to mention ill be using the 3.45 for a while, dont wanna be on it for too long...it has 204k on it.

My diff lasted 3 years with the original owner and maybe 2 with me until it went south.
The track put a toll on it. :)

Bluebimma 07-15-2007 12:57 AM

Lol, tempting as it will be to get on it or go track it, i think ill take it easy until i get the 3.46.

1996 328ti 07-15-2007 01:27 AM

A 2.8 is not enough on the track these days.
I can hang with E36 M3s on a good day but can't keep up with E46 M3s.

Now a 3.0L Twin Turbo, that will be a different story. :)

That sounds like a plan. My car isn't fit to drive anywhere in the coming days either.

Hmm...If i cant hang with anyone, its still worth having the fun and experience of the track.

Make sure to do the M50 manifold conversion... it's killer!! We did it to dad's M roadster and it brought the 0-60 down to 4.3 secs (already has K&N filter, exhaust, BavAuto flash (faster than the previous Turner Conforti flash), and Fan Delete). Before the 0-60 was 4.5 secs, it's incredible!!

Wow, sounds pretty cool. Im not sure how much modding i want to do on install. I have a couple things in mind that i wouldnt mind getting out of the way, but it all depends on time, money, and if i actually need to be faster. Im going to pick up my old CRX tomorrow that i sold last year. I found it craigslist for 400$ an the guy i sold it to fixed it up quite nicely. :) Ill be picking up a second job to help speed things along and get the engine running in the chassis at least by the time the leaves start changing colors. Wish me luck. lol
