M52 swap shifter question

Hey everyone. I got my swap finished and running. But the shifter position is less than desirable.

I still have the getrag that the 318ti came with

It seems like the shifter is pushed a little too far back and it barely will stay in 4 th gear.

I have done some research and it looks like getting a z3 shifter and the mount rod will help the positioning of the lever

After doing some searching it seems like I may need to bend the gear selector rod or shorten it. If I got the whole 1.9 z3 or the 2.5 shift assembly would this fix my problem?

I was just wanting to know what everyone else has done with their swaps

Also sorry if this is the wrong place for this thread.

You just need an M52 shift linkage

Are you referring to the gear selector rod or the mounting rod?

i think the gear selector rod, but i am not 100% sure to be honest. i think that is it because it is what i have compiled down on my list of parts required for the swap

I have read that you may need to bend that rod or get a shorter one from a 325.

I’m just trying to figure you the best route to go

yea that would make sense, its something to look into myself for my own swap

Seems like you need the carrier and selector rod from a 325, since those had the 6 cyl. with Getrag tranny. I mistakenly picked those pieces up thinking they were the same as 328i. But later learned that they are different part numbers. I'm going with the ZF trans so think I'm going to need the 328/M3 pieces instead.

….You haven't got those around have ya? Trade?

I ended up buying a full 2.5 z3 shifter assembly so I’m hoping that had all the parts in it I need. It should be here in the next couple of days. I’ll let you know if that stuff is wrong and maybe we can work something out.

Unfortunately, the Z3 has a really long shift carrier and selector rod. When I had my Z3 I was amazed how much longer that was than the E36. Just part of the seating position being so close to the rear axle.

The solution is the parts from E36 325i. M5x based engine + getrag trans.

I found that out yesterday. I kept the shifter lever. I am using the 318ti shifter arm and I cut the z3 selector rod down but made it around 15mm longer then the stock ti selector rod and welded it back together. Every gear goes in good and will stay in and the z3 lever is a nice addition.
