Swiggity Swap

Most of this is from my intro but I didn't think that was the place for a swap/build thread

I found my ti for 2500 on cl and got it for 1800. Still more than kbb but I'm OK with that, its super fun. I haven't had a rwd car since my 928.

The day after I bought the ti, I passed a towing lot that I pass all the time and out of the corner of my eye, I saw a badge that I hadn't seen there before.

$600 later, I had a donor.

So far, I have ordered a gripforce "stage4" clutch, rear mains, vac Motorsport oil pump upgrade, m3 clutch slave, and some other goodies. Next on my list is main and rod bearings.

The po went under a cable guardrail, and the posts destroyed lots of stuff. Hopefully it stalled and didn't run long without oil.

Thanks all for looking!

Got a Bunch of goodies, still need to get engine arms, oil pickup tube, Rod & main bearings with their associated torque to yield bolts.

Anybody on here done this before their swaps? I am just leaning toward throwing in oe stuff. all the race bearings I have found are 2-4 times as expensive. Wish I had a sponsor :P

1st box of goodies. also got a medium case 3.25 lsd differential and a clutch.

Threw on the m3 DS1 wheels for good measure. They're a bit beat up but i like 'em.

semi novice question... does anybody know if BMW has a torque sequence for the crankshaft main bearings? Im not about to warp my crank! I may just use this here 2jz pattern and the s50 torque numbers of 20 Nm, then an additional 50 degrees.

Random_task 05-06-2014 05:29 PM

No longer doing mains, just rods.

Does anybody have stock s50 rod journal specs?

Mine measured at 1.7675" (44.894)

Just wanna buy the right ones

This is #6

Got my answer in case anybody looks at this thread from search

NielM from bimmerforums

"From my Haynes manual:

Rod bearing journal diameter for 6-cyl VANOS engines:
Standard 44.975/+0.016mm
1st undersize 44.725/+0.016mm
2nd undersize 44.475/+0.016mm

Bearing shells are in RealOEM here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...19&hg=11&fg=20

Rod bearing running clearance measured with Plastigage is specified at 0.010-0.052mm.

If you're doing engine work I strongly recommend getting the Haynes manual, since it has engine and other internal parts information and methods that Bentley apparently thinks we don't need. Since only it only goes through the 95MY and is for Euro models (M3 not included), you do need to pay attention to what it covers and whether it's applicable to us, but the core info is good. See http://www.amazon.com/3-Series-Servi.../dp/185960210X"

Hooray .038

Still need to finish the bearings

Till then I drove it slow mode

Went up the mountain and ran over my grill

And went to a road race/autocross/box racehttp://i911.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/IMAG0094.jpg

Thing body rolls hard! After I do the drive train swap I think I'll get some fortune auto Coilovers.

AAAAnd we're back

Since last time, I installed my e28 medium case 3.25 LSD
Only have one pre-swap pic of that one:

Then the ODO said iBoobs:

http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/IMAG0045.jpg

and then in the course of the last 3 days, only having 3 hours each day before work, I Yanked the engine:

Cleaned up the trans:

Installed the f1 stage 4:
thought I had some better snaps of that one.

Plopped the trans on:

And this is where I am. tonight I will install the z3 rack and hopefully start cleaning up the bay/cutting out some 4cyl tabs tomorrow.

Thanks for tuning in!

Nice work happening here... Sweet!

AnuketTi 07-03-2014 11:10 PM

Nice work there man. Was the E28 rear diff a straight swap or require new axles, etc?

Random_task 07-03-2014 11:18 PM

Requires 6cyl e30 axles (shorter)
EDIT: 6 cyl e30 axle cups/flanges
6cyl e30 diff cover
You have to space out the wheel speed sensors or they get ruined.

I just took them out because my abs doesn't work anyway.

Marv17 07-05-2014 11:57 PM

nice short story ... great project. you got lucky on your find. i hope the parts and specs that you used work out and that the motor runs strong and healthy. it'll be a more fun car once its all done. swap in the front brakes. if you want to swap in the rear brakes i can try and send you the specs of the adapters i made out of aircraft aluminum to use to install the rear M brakes. I used the 1 series rear rotors as well.

Random_task 07-06-2014 12:23 AM

That would be epic! There's more to ad here, I just haven't had the time. Yesterday the u pull and pay had a 50%off sale. They had a z3 and a ti. I got a driver side door, an obc/clock, the z3 subframe brace thing and a Volvo fan. 3 days off tomorrow, lots of gettin dirty.

Marv those specs would be awesome, I really Want to run them. I tried to swap the master cyl. But the m3 has 2 same size ports where as my ti has a larger front port. I'll just do it later, I don't feel like redoing ALL of my brake lines right now.

Poor z3http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/IMAG0089.jpg
http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/IMAG0090.jpg

Marv17 07-06-2014 12:45 AM

If that was a 1.9 L Z3 then get that steering rack. Yeah I'll see If I can find the specs.
You have to run the master cylinder if I'm not mistaken too.

Random_task 07-06-2014 12:57 AM

That rack was gone but that's OK, I already have one in the car :P

I wanted that one to sell it.
