Fuse Box
 

I'm amazed how well I was able to photograph the fuse box diagram.

There are alot of interesting comments to be made here. Read some of the descriptions of what each position is reserved for. Then, see if you have a fuse in that position. I was very surprised that I had fuses in some positions, where I didn't have that option.

I piggy backed onto fuse # 24 for my heated wiper fluid. The description is "heated spray nozzles". Look in the last column, fifth item down, "Outside temperature display Parking Aid". Seems the little sensor we have been talking about does feed into a slew of features.

Fuse # 31 is tied to the clock, and the OBC, check the last column. I don't have OBC, and I have a fuse in areas it says are used for OBC.

I tied into fuse# 25 for the engine compartment light.

Fuses # 40 and #5 are reserved for lumbar support, which I will be adding soon. Looks like our cars have fuse assignments for practically every option an E36 could possibly have.

Some of these assignments are really weird:

Hinged window
Family package
Belt Tensioner/ Belt Catch
Natural Gas
Roll Over Protection
Trailer

Cool stuff:

Lumbar Support
Parking Aid
Headlight cleaning system
Radio Remote Control

The list goes on and on:smile:

That reminds me... I was looking for the physical location of fuse #49 but never found it. Before I go digging around under the dash again, could someone confirm that this is the fuse for the cargo area light that's near the right side brake light assembly? If that's the correct fuse... where in the world is it in a '97??

According to the fuse list, it says # 33.

Hmmm... OK maybe #49 is not the droid I'm looking for. Is the "luggage compartment" serviced by #49 possibly the "trunk" in the rest of the 3-series?

My CD changer definitely works and it's also on #33.

I'll try to check this out again tomorrow during the day. I've already tried a fresh bulb, and apparently so had the P.O. because I found an opened pack of bulbs when I put the ones I had bought in the cubby hole back there. Oh well... at least my new hatch struts work wonderfully back there so I don't have to worry about being crushed while looking around in the back of the car. :-)

By the way I have an issue with my fog lights. I do not know but I have blown more than 20 fuses, how can I find the the wire problem?

Out of curiosity, what is fuse 16 (Natural Gas) for?
While jumping my low-speed fan relay, I accidentally touched the wrong prong and blew fuse 16.

Ancient thread revival.

The ETM shows F16 going to the A/C compressor and auxiliary fan relays, and also to a 316g's changeover module and gas density sensor. The 316g can also burn compressed natural gas (CNG).

Oh that makes sense now. Never even knew there was a BMW 316g which burned natural gas. Thanks for the info!!

Clearer / Cleaner Photograph or Scan of Fuse List?
 

Is there a cleaner version of the Fuse Box Diagram as mine is all in German. Please help.

If you head over to www.realoem.com, key in your car's VIN or its particulars, and then search for "fuse box", you should find a page that will give you a part number for a new fuse box label.

It should not be so expensive, even from a BMW dealer.
