e36 Compact Key Fob, Randomly works

Hello,
I have an e36 Compact (318Ti) when i brought it i played around with the key fob
http://i41.tinypic.com/156cz12.jpg

but i could never get it to work so it got thrown in the glove box and never bothered with it, however last night i was sorting out my glove box and thought id try it again, I kept pressing the red button and it locked and after pressing it many times it unlocked
holding or pressing the white button seems to just flash the hazards
(i think someone has taken the actual alarm out)

Really don't understand how it can work randomly but not other times, i replaced the battery in
the fob thinking that must just be dead but still no different. anyone played about with these?
would be nice to get it working.

Thanks
Mike

Okay after digging around i found this for my model

Quote:

1) Prise out the rubber bung from the remote receiver.
2) Insert a thin screwdriver into the hole and flick the coding switch to the right to set the remote receiver into “program” mode.
3) Press the red button once on each remote (max 4 remotes).
4) Flick the coding switch back to the left and replace the rubber bung.Your fobs should now work.
Heres what mine looks like:

I found the little switch and followed the steps (with it plugged in unlike in pic lol) but still no joy
Naff receiver? it looks like its been opened up before and played about with

Quote:

If there still seems to be a problem prise the remote receiver off the control unit to reset it. When you replace it (be careful you don’t bend the pins) the central locking should close & open. Re-code your fob as in steps 1 to 4.
it also did this exactly as it should be wont program to the fob for some reason
