Cool autocross pic sequence
 

A fellow autocrosser took a ton of pics at the Boston Chapter event yesterday. I noticed a cool sequence of me drifting around a sweeper and going thru a slalom. I'm doing about 65-70mph in that section.

He sure did do a great job! He took a TON of me.. probably 30-40 pics. He also told me that those picasaweb/google albums will only be there for a couple weeks.

We had about 93 cars running, and got a full 8 runs in! :D Was a great day, and we had everything packed by 4:45. 21 new novices, probably totalled 850 runs(including reruns) on a ~85-100 second course.

What other bimmer site did they get posted to?

Very cool pics. I'd go with more spring in the back and more spring and something like the H&R 28mm bar in the front. No rear bar here with good results. I run out of tire on kumho mx's before I run out of suspension.


It's to bad those of us that track and auto-x our cars live so far apart. I'm thinking we need to do an annual 318ti track day. Barber seems like a good spot. About 9 hours away from me. Most of us seem to be on the east coast or the middle somewhere. Not sure what else there is in the Tennessee area.

What wheels are on your car Larryn ? They look similar to 5Zigen FNO1R-C's.

My track wheels (pictured) are D-Force LTW5's in 17x9. They do look a bit like the sZigen, but these are 16.2lbs each. I think the 5Zigen ProRacers are about 20lbs each.

Agreed about the lack of 'tis doing events together.

I have 550lb race springs in back, the stock vermicelli sized rear sway, and a fat front swaybar. I really need to flatten out the back. The 255 AD-07s are just too sticky of a tire and makes the car lean and squat too much. I'm thinking of a M Coupe rear sway. The only thing is that I'm already lifting the front tire a bit, and with how much these cars flex (even with the X Brace), I think that I'll be a frequent three wheeler.

Btw, I think I might've gotten FTD for street tires, with prob 80 cars running street tires. I think I'm finally learning how to drive this new diff to it's potential. If I flatten the car out more, I think I can even improve a bit.

Whats your suspension set up?

Koni's up front with H&R Sports, M3 frt sway. Bilstein sports in back with 318ti rear sway and 550lb race springs. 3.5 degrees of camber up front, 2.5 degrees in the rear.

I need to update the rear swaybar, and possibly even beefier springs. I want to keep it somewhat comfortable on the street though, so I don't think I'll replace all the bushings quite yet.

Agreed that would be pretty cool. What rear spring rates are you running with no rear bar?

Good question! I'm curious as well, since I get so much body roll with pretty beefy rear springs as it is, and a minimal rear swaybar.

I need to make the car flatter. :(

Koni double adjustable shocks revalved by TcKline to handle up to 700 pound springs front and rear. They are set 1/4 turn from full hard in the rear(rebound), set to 50% up front(rebound). 8 clicks from full for compression on the front and 5 clicks full from compression on the rear. 550# up front and 500# in the rear. 28MM H&R bar up front with GC M3 style endlinks set to full soft. My car is very flat through the corners and hooks up well when you get on the gas. I had a little bit of oversteer on corner entry when I had my sway bar set to full hard. Once I realized I had it set to full hard and moved it to the inner mounting point the car went very neutral.

I didn't even think the bilstein sports could handle a 500# spring. So you may not have enough rear dampening for that spring.

Those H&R sport springs up front may also be part of your issue, they are only something like 230# springs. From the pictures it looks like your front leans a lot worse than the rear. Also, how old are the shocks? Could they need to be rebuilt/revalved? I have about 3 autocrosses and 5 track days on the current setup.

I know my spring rates don't make sense when you look at what most people do over at BfC on the E36's but I have talked to some people that race E30's and it is common for them to do something like 800 or 900 pound springs up front and 700 pound springs in the back without a rear sway bar. My motor is basically stock so while I do get a little bit of squat under acceleration it is not nearly as bad as it would be with an s52.
