Engine just started dying... I'm new to this board, but did a search and didn't find a match to my problem... Anyway, my '98 Ti has been running just fine when suddenly, as I was driving out of a parking lot, the engine just died and the check engine light came on. Now I have to rev it to keep it running at all and will die quickly regardless of my reving it. The CEL is on all the time now... I changed the fuel filter about 500 miles ago so that's not a problem... I kind of assumed that the fuel pump is probably bad and I will go through the test routine when I have time but I wonder if any have any thoughts? Thanks for your replies! -CKKrause |
there are 2 sensors Cam angle sensor Flywheel position sensor. These 2 will both throw a CEL, and cause the engine to stop running. Try to get a faultcode reading done, to see if it is this and let us know what it was after ;) |
I was thinking if the throttle body causes it. If it was dirty then clean it. Check also the base idle speed. Changing the air and fuel filter would be great. ___________________ Autopartswarehouse.com Car Mods. |
the TB won´t throw the CEL. It wil just run rough.. If its throwing a CEL then there must be a sensor or some electronic faliure, registered as a code on the DME readouts. Get the thing tested , and there should be a result out of that ;) |
Mine did the exact same, it was either the cam or crank sensor I forget which. |
Thanks to all! I'm going to run the codes and see what's going on... I'll report back.. -CKKrause |

Thank you for all your comments. I got lucky and got a Peake tool for cheap and read the codes. It was, in fact, the Cam position sensor. So, about $125 and 2 hours installing, I'm on the road again!! Thanks again!! -CKKrause |
That's good to see you got your hands dirty. So many get nervous with newer cars and bring it to a shop and get rooked. Buddy brought his 99 M3 in they said $650 for the Cam Shaft Position Sensor, Laughed and did it for biers out on town. Saved him quite a few bucks needless to say, now he won't be so quick to bring it in either. |
Good job, man! |
you gotta love OBD :) |
