swap problems

any swap experts out there. I have a 95ti with a 95M3 motor, a 413 ecu with an ews delete chip. I am getting no gas and no spark. I can jump the fuel pump relay and get gas. The motor and harness were bought seperately as was the ecu. The ti is an 11/95 production. Any help would be great.
thanks

I have responded to your PM but I'll do so here as well for the benefit of the group.

First thing I see is the production date of the car. 11/95 is most likely a 1996 model year. The fact that you have the EWS system, drives this home. Now you are trying to mate a 1996 car with a 1995 harness. Not impossible, but I think actually more difficult than if a 1996 engine/harness/ECU were used.

Second, is what exactly is a EWS delete chip? The EWS must have a power lead satisfied- it cannot be "cut out" of the system without shutting down. The fact that you can "hot wire" the fuel pump relay reinforces this theory. I think the EWS is still doing it's job.

Since you essentially have an OBD-II conversion to OBD-I, I suggest you contact Brett Anderson at Koala Motorsports for assistance (which he may or may not charge you for). He is quite knowledgeable in the OBD-I swaps, and helped me a bit while I was preparing to do my swap. His OBD-II knowledge is limited, so he could only help me "so far", and I had to figure a few things out on my own. In the end, I'm quite pleased overall, and his help, knowledge and experience was invaluable in assisting me. You can tell him Jim Leach sent you, but I doubt he'll remember me, as it was quite a few years ago now...

Best of luck with your project.

to my knowlege EWS has been around since at least 94 in 3 series and M3's production dates of 1/95 and on have EWSII. My ti is listed as a 95 model year by vin, ie the 10th character is an S which signifies a 95. I cant find an OBDII port on the car either i cant just assume its an OBDII because its late production. Thanks for your insight.

1995 production date as you have verified by the VIN, but 1996 model year; IE it has all the features etc of a 1996 car. This is the difference between production date and model year (and other changes occurred "mid-year" as well).

The time frame you are in is a very gray area for the ti's, and I'm hesitant to offer any advice because of it. It is quite likely I would have had similar problems if I was in your position- you have a bit of a project there I'm afraid.

it is indeed grey, I take it you would have told me how to verify one way or the other if you knew how to tell if it was OBDI or OBDII. BTW i spoke with brett at KMS today he thinks it in the wiring, between the original ti stuff an the new M harness. I initially didnt mention it because i didnt want to lead you, you seemed to have a lot of knowledge and i didnt want to misdirect you. I checked some things he mentioned and i cant see that its a problem but i am not an wiring diagram pro.
thanks again

One way to tell if it's OBD-I or OBD-II is the code test using the gas pedal.
Does anyone have the procedure to read OBD-I codes?

cali-ti 03-10-2006 05:16 AM

how about the presence or lack of the OBD II port on the lower left dash? by law it had to be there on OBD II cars. my 96 has it.

We are also assuming it is a US spec car.

mizo 03-10-2006 05:36 AM

car is us spec and there is no OBDII port under driver dash

If it is OBD-I it has an AFM instead of a MAF.
