1991 BMW E36 316 engine swap to 95 M42, Need help with ews!!!

Well... Some friends have swapped the 316 engine to a 318 M42 engine... And the new Engine got EWS II but the old one dosnt... How can i get the car to start ;P ?

I got the DME from the new engine, and all the wiering, but aint got the EWS from it ...

How can I get it to work ? ;P

do you have the key from the new engine? it should work with that, if you don't have it, get the VIN off the new engine, go to the BMW dealer and if you can prove that you own the car legally, they should make you a new key with the EWS chip in it

We do not have the key... Well the new engine has EWS II, and the old one got EWS I...
And we do not have the EWS module from the new engine... So that leavs us with a DME, engine and wiering that think it has EWS II.. but it dont... any way to jump the starter circut ? or get arond the EWS ?

You'll need an EWS unit... There are some ways around it, but I've never seen anybody post exactly how to do it as people are concerned that telling people how to do it would make it easier to steal our cars... Best I've been able to tell is that when the key and the EWS unit match up, there is a 12v signal that is sent to the ECU. So figure out exactly which input is the EWS to ECU input, and that may be where you need to send 12v.

I can tell you that on a 95 with EWS II there is no coding in the ECU itself.. As long as the key matches the EWS unit the ECU will get power and start up.

Okey, thanks alot... Yeah, on the 318i ECU 12v is suppose to be sent to pin 81 by a black and violet cable i think... Il try give it 12v from a other source than the EWS and see if it starts... thanks alot...
Its also a cable from the EWS to the ECU thats black, and that goes to pin 74, but its signals from alot other things in this cable to... so I guess its the black/violet one...

you cannot bypass EWSII unless it is deleted from the DME software... you may get it cranking, but it will not fire.

Your only way around this is either to have it deleted from the DME itself... OR to buy the EWSII unit and new keys for the transponder chips.. and I don't know whats in there on EWSI already but you may also need the antenna box, and some wiring knowledge.

and PS. im not talking out my ass... EWSII, at least in 96+ OBDII's is impossible to bypass, maybe slightly possible if you are an automotive electrical engineer. Ive talked to many a folk about it, researched for countless hours and my only option was to send my DME to activeautowerke in Florida and have them delete it while they did my "tune".

Well, it is possible... friend of mine bypassed EWSII a few months ago... but his away for several months now...
Only diffrence is that his car and the new engine had EWSII ... now only the engine got EWSII and the car EWSI...

I have the DME from the OBDI engine befor the swap...

I know it is an old topic, but I have the issue like your friend did, my car is 316i M43 97 and I made an engine swap with a M44 318is 1.9 97.

Both are EWSII.

Can you guys give me some help over here?

If you only swaped the engine and the DME I think the easiest way is to swap the lock at the stairingwheel and use the new engine key's as the DME would accept these...

I use the key chip also. It is complete.
Today I realize that I have a problem. When I connect the diagnostic GT1 , the dashboard appears like the ignition was ON, BUT without the key in the ignition.

I believe there is a relay or something..with has a problem.

Anyone any idea..?

Fagerheim 03-27-2010 12:28 PM

What do you mean by the "key chip"...
The ewsII dosnt work by relays its a bus system...

roby_m 03-27-2010 12:30 PM

In the plastic part of the key there is a chip.

About the last thing, forget about the Ews, the problem is different from the ews now.
It;s about the diagnostic connector.

Does the car start now ? what happends when u try to start it ?
what is the problem ? =P
